Lady Panthers smother Rockhurst for win at home

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- The Drury Lady Panthers put on a strong mid-game defensive show and coasted to a solid 73-46 win over the Rockhurst Hawks Thursday night at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.

Drury limited Rockhurst to just six points in the second quarter and followed that by holding the visitors to only eight points in the third period and easily improved to 17-6 overall for the season and to 13-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

After leading by a 19-18 margin after the opening quarter, the defense made the difference in the runaway victory.

"We had a real physical week last week, and you could see that in the first quarter," said Drury head coach Kaci Bailey.  "It took a while to get our motors going tonight, but when we did, we stayed the course, and it showed."

Seniors Makaiya Brooks and Anna Hitt paced the scoring, finishing with 17 and 11 points, respectively, with Brooks hitting on 5 of 10 attempts from three-point range.

But it may have been the battle on the boards that spelled the difference, as Drury outrebounded the Hawks 58-36, with sophomore Sara Mendel dominating, matching a career-best 16 rebounds.

"We got beat on the boards last Saturday," added Bailey.  "But before the game tonight, Sara said she was gonna be a beast on the boards, and she was."

Also significant in the game was a seven-assist night for senior Caitlynn Daniels.  That pushed her career college assist total past 500 and into a tie for sixth place in her Drury career.

Rockhurst, which fell to 6-15 overall and 4-11 in the GLVC, had no players reach double-figure scoring as the Lady Panthers held them to 21 percent shooting for the game.

The Lady Panthers return to action on Saturday, February 15th, when they will host William Jewell in a 1 pm contest at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
