Logan Applegate's record-setting day helps Panthers get past Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo.— Logan Applegate scored a career-high 36 points and set a program record with 10 three-pointers as Drury won at Southwest Baptist 89-59 on Saturday afternoon in Bolivar, Missouri.

The Panthers lifted their record to 13-12 and 8-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Bearcats dropped to 7-17 and 4-14 in the GLVC.

Applegate had 17 points at halftime, then added 19 in the second half to finish with 36 in 29 minutes of playing time. The junior from Nevada, Missouri, set a program record with 10 three-pointers in the game. Applegate was 13 for 18 from the field and was 10 of 14 from behind the arc. His 10th three-pointer broke a Drury single-game record previously held by Alex Hall, who hit nine threes on Dec. 6, 2012, against Missouri S&T.

"We know this is a rivalry game and, even though they've got some injuries to deal with, Southwest Baptist is going to play with a big amount of pride," said Drury head coach Chris Foster. "We weathered a storm early, then Applegate started hitting shots and we got some separation.

"There were times when he was pretty well covered but he still has the ability to hit shots on those. I thought our guys continued to find and he was rolling…it was fun to watch."

Applegate's 36 points was the season-high for any Drury player this year and is the second-most points scored by a player in the GLVC this season.

Zach Howell added 13 points for Panthers as Drury shot 51 percent from the field in the game, hitting 34 of 67 shots and 15 of 35 three-point attempts for 43 percent.

Southwest Baptist led 15-11 with 11:33 left in the first half, but the Panthers outscored SBU 32-5 for the rest of the half to take a 43-20 lead at the intermission.

Bayley Crawford led the Bearcats with 18 points.

Drury returns to the road on Thursday, Feb. 27, when they travel to Missouri-St. Louis for a 7:30 pm game.
