Panthers take down 8th ranked Missouri S&T on Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— The Drury Panthers capped the 2024-25 season with an 89-77 win over eighth-ranked Missouri S&T on Senior Day at the O'Reilly Family Event Center in Springfield on Saturday.

Drury went to 14-13 and 9-11 in the GLVC. The Miners suffered only their fourth loss of the year and dropped to 23-4 and 17-3 in the conference.

The Panthers led 41-38 at halftime, but Missouri S&T pushed to a 54-50 lead with 13:26 left. Drury then got back-to-back three-pointers, the first by Zach Howell, then another from Kanon Gipson, which put the Panthers in front 56-54. Drury never trailed again and Brock Wakefield's three with 2:42 remaining gave the Panthers a double-digit lead, 80-69.

Six Drury players, including all three seniors, scored in double-figures. Wakefield led the team with 17 points, five assists, three steals and was 3 for 5 from three-point range. Quenton Shelton had 13 points and hit five free throws down the stretch to put the game away, and Riek Riek added 12 points and eight rebounds.

"I think it speaks to how much our three seniors mean to our group as the way we played today was for those guys," said Drury head coach Chris Foster. "I've never been more happy and sad at the same time. I'm happy for our guys today, but I wish it wasn't over. At the end, though, I feel really fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach those three."

The Panthers ended the game shooting 53 percent, hitting 30 of 57 shots and Drury was 21 for 28 at the free throw line. Missouri S&T, the only team in the GLVC shooting above 50 percent for the season, shot 45 percent (29 for 64) but were held to 39 percent in the second half. The Miners connected on just 12 of their 21 free throw attempts.

Drury owned a 39-29 advantage in rebounding.

Seniors Riek Riek, Quenton Shelton, and Brock Wakefield all closed their careers with a win and the Panthers first victory over a nationally ranked team since March 5, 2019, when Drury beat 15th ranked Lewis in the GLVC semifinals in Edwardsville, Ill.

The Panthers also closed out the season winning four of their last six games
