SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury's offense and
Gage Hayes led the Panthers to a 15-3 run-rule win over William Jewell in the opening game of Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play.
After an inning-ending double play in the top of the first, Drury's offense went into an explosion.
Carter Wambach started the scoring with a sac fly to score
Wyatt Morgan.
Cannon Stuckey had a two-RBI single to score
Jackson Crider and
Gabe Russell. The Panthers held a three-run advantage after one.
The Panthers scored one in the second then poured three more on in the third. A
Hesston Gray single scored
Connor Bain started the scoring.
Luke Matschiner tripled to score Gray followed by a
Wyatt Morgan single to score Matschiner.
Connor Bain grabbed the first of three homers the Panthers had in the game in the fourth inning to put Drury up 8-0.
Jewell got on the board in the top of the fifth with two runs. Drury responded to those runs with five of their own including a
Jackson Crider home run.
The Cardinals scored once more in the sixth followed by a
Landon Willbrand homer and a Bain RBI single to end the scoring at 15-3 in the seventh inning.
Every Panther who had an at-bat recorded either a hit or an RBI, paced by
Jackson Crider, who extended his hit streak to 14, with four hits.
Gage Hayes threw a complete game allowing three runs and striking out eight. Hayes moved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
Drury will play games two and three of the four-game series against Jewell tomorrow starting at 1 pm at Mark Worley Field at Meador Park.
