SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Drury men's rugby dropped its season opener to Kansas, 42-3, in a college friendly match held at Springfield Rugby Football Club Saturday afternoon.

Kansas set the tone for the contest, racing to a 20-0 first-half advantage. Despite the unfavorable scoreline, the Panthers showcased moments of skill and determination. Newcomer Riley Rhea stood out in his debut, sharing co-man of the match honors with JJ Jackson, who was also playing in his first college match. Both players were recognized for their substantial contributions and effort throughout the match.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Kansas expanding its lead. Drury's Nicholas Sanders scored the only points for the Panthers, converting a penalty goal.

"The match may not have gone as we had hoped, but the team never slowed and turned in some very good periods of play that just weren't consolidated in scores," Drury head coach Bryan Bevel commented.

Looking ahead, Drury will aim to regroup for a road match against Saint Louis University, slated for Friday, Sept. 5, in St. Louis.
