EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Drury women's swimming & diving opened the first day of competition at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships with a victory in the 800 free relay Tuesday, while the DU men placed second in the same event -- the lone competition on day one of the conference meet at Deaconess Aquatic Center.
 
The Panthers won the women's 800 free relay behind the efforts of Belen Morales, Gwen Bergum, Ashlyn Moore and Nikol Maniko, who posted an NCAA-II Provisional qualifying time of 7:21.33 to edge second-place Indianapolis (7:26.12) by just under five seconds. Drury's 'B' team also picked up points with an 11th place finish as Sophia Kelly, Whitney Stortz, Rianne Rose and Maria Fe Munoz swam a time of 7:34.29.
 
The Drury men's 800 free relay team placed second, with the quartet of Lucas Mineur, Joao Nogueira, Alvaro Zornoza, and Matteo Vissotto combined for a time of 6:26.58. McKendree won the event with a time of 6:25.51, edging the Panthers by just over one second. Drury's 'B' team finished 13th as Josue Hernandez, Colby Hughes, Jaime Gomez-Guillamon and Mike Jasinski posted a time of 6:41.54.
 
The Drury women's team leads the points standings after one day with 96, followed by Indianapolis (86) and UMSL (80).
 
McKendree leads the men's standings with 94 points, while the Panthers are in third with 84 points, just two points behind second-place UIndy.
 
Day two of the GLVC Championships begins Wednesday morning with the 200 individual medley, 50 free, and the first two heats of the 1000 free, beginning at 10 a.m. (CT). The women's 1-meter diving prelims are set to begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by the finals kicking off at 5:30 p.m.
