Offensive Explosion Carries Panthers to Victory in Series Finale With UCO

EDMOND, Okla. — Drury baseball rebounded from its first shutout setback of the season in a big way, as the Panthers scored in six different innings and pounded out 23 hits in a 12-7 victory in the final game of their series with Central Oklahoma Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

Eight different Panther hitters recorded multi-hit performances in the victory, including the trio of Connor Bain, Logan Reidelberger and Colin McClure, who combined for 10 hits and nine runs batted-in on the afternoon. McClure delivered a career-best four-hit effort, while Jackson Crider registered the game-tying RBI-double in the second inning, before Bain belted a back-breaking grand slam that turned a one-run DU lead into an 8-3 advantage that the Bronchos would never seriously threaten.

The Panthers' 23 hits marked their top single-game output since March 19, 2022, when Drury also recorded 23 hits in a 22-3 win over Southern Indiana.

Drury (5-2) opened the contest by taking advantage of a Crider single and a Bronchos error to plate a pair of unearned runs. Carter Wambach and Greydon Miller came through with back-to-back, two-out singles that brought in runs for a 2-0 DU lead.

UCO (9-4) answered with three runs in the home half of the first off Panthers starter Nick Panagos, highlighted by run-scoring hits from Luke Stout and Drake Lee.

But the Panthers promptly answered with two more runs to claim the lead for good in the second. Jackson Edwards started the rally with the first of his two hits in the game, a leadoff single up the middle, and Luke Matschiner kept the momentum going with a bunt single to set up Crider's game-tying double to left. Next, Reidelberger put the Panthers in front with an RBI-grounder to the right side for a 4-3 DU advantage.

Panagos kept the Panthers in front with scoreless frames in the second and third, before Bain's grand slam handed DU a five-run cushion. Landon Willbrand and Matschiner set the table with back-to-back singles to open the inning, before Reidelberger's base hit loaded the bases. Bain then blasted his second home run of the season over the wall in right field for an 8-3 lead.

UCO trimmed the deficit to three runs on a pair of run-scoring grounders in the bottom of the fourth, then pulled to within 8-6 on Caleb Castle's RBI-single in the fifth.

Drury responded in the sixth, when McClure's two-out double scored a pair of runs following singles by Bain and MIller. The Panthers would add single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings. Matschiner, who went 3-for-5 with a pair of walks and three runs scored on the day, sparked the seventh-inning threat, coaxing a walk before stealing second and moving to third on Crider's grounder to shortstop. Reidelberger followed with a base hit to center to stretch the lead to 11-6.

After UCO scored its final run on a Colton Ayres RBI-single in the home half of the seventh, Reidelberger struck again. This time the senior first baseman drove a base hit down the left-field line to score Willbrand, who singled and swiped second to set up the rally.

After Panagos (1-0) scattered four earned runs on nine hits while striking out four Bronchos over 6.0 innings, Markell Dixon and Alex Logan teamed up to close out the victory with three solid innings of relief. Logan allowed just one hit over the final two frames, as the trio combined to fan eight UCO hitters on the afternoon.

In addition to McClure's four-hit day, Matschiner, Reidelberger, Bain and Miller each logged three-hit performances, while Crider, Edwards and Willbrand finished with two-hit afternoons for Drury.

Stout led the Bronchos with a 2-for-5 day at the plate with two RBIs, while Kamden Thompson (2-1) suffered the mound setback after allowing six runs on nine hits over 3.1 innings.
