Panthers Take Two at DU Invite to Extend Win Streak

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Thanks to another big day at the plate, No. 24 Drury baseball captured wins over Washburn and Missouri S&T to complete a three-game sweep of the Drury Invitational Saturday at Mark Worley Field at Meador Park.

Drury (8-2) scored a combined total of 29 runs on 29 hits in its two victories that stretched the Panthers' win streak to four-straight games. Greydon Miller led DU with a pair of three-hit games, finishing the day 6-of-10 with six runs batted-in and five runs scored, while Jackson Crider added five hits and four RBIs in just eight official at-bats Saturday.

The duo of Crider and Miller completed a dominant weekend at the plate, combining to go 13-for-22 with 14 RBIs in the Panthers' three wins over the last two days. As a team, the Panthers outscored their three foes by a combined 42-23 margin while batting .438 as a club.

Game 1 - Drury 12, Washburn 8
Drury overcame an early 3-0 deficit by scoring six times in the third inning to gain control, then put the game out of reach with six more runs over the fifth and sixth innings. Crider's RBI-single sparked the Panthers' six-run rally, before Connor Bain doubled home a run and Miller delivered the big blow with a two-run double to left-center to put DU on top to stay.

Jackson Edwards kicked off his 2-for-3 afternoon with a run-scoring single to cap the third-inning rally for a 6-3 DU advantage.

After allowing a pair of Washburn runs in the first inning and single tallies in the third and fourth frames, Drury starting pitcher Kaleb Thomas (2-0) settled into a groove to preserve the lead with 7.0 solid innings over which he allowed four runs on five hits while striking out three.

Drury opened up a 10-4 lead with another big inning in the fifth, this time scoring four times thanks in large part to Caleb Briggs's three-run double and Crider's second run-scoring double of the night.

Miller, who led the Panthers' 12-hit attack with three extra-base hits, added another double to highlight DU's two-run sixth that made it a 12-4 affair.

Thomas turned in three straight scoreless innings to close out his performance, facing the minimum while permitting just one baserunner of the same span.

Washburn (6-8) mounted a comeback bid in the eighth, striking for three runs against the Drury bullpen. But after entering with the bases loaded and just one out, Kade Biellier limited the damage by retiring the next two hitters on a fly ball and a fielder's choice grounder to maintain a five-run cushion.

Biellier allowed a run in the ninth after back-to-back Ichabod hits opened the inning, but closed out the victory by retiring three of the next four hitters.

Crider and Logan Reidelberger finished with matching 2-for-5 efforts at the plate, while both Briggs and Miller drove in three runs for the Panthers.

Game 2 - Drury 17, Missouri S&T 6
The Panthers stayed hot at the plate in the nightcap, tallying at least two runs in each of their six turns at-bat to run away with the 17-6 run-rule victory. Led by three-hit efforts from Crider (3-for-3) and Miller (3-for-5), Drury gashed the Miners for 17 hits, running their combined total over their four-game win streak to 69 hits.

DU overcame a strong offensive start to the night by Missouri S&T (6-3), which scored a two-out run in the first and then two more in the third against Panther starter Nick Panagos (1-0).

Luke Matschiner, who scored four times in the contest, led off the game with a base hit for Drury, before Bain doubled him home and Miller plated a second run with his grounder to short to put DU in front, 2-1.

Drury used two-run rallies in the second and third frames to stretch their lead to 6-3. Crider singled home Landon Willbrand, then pulled off a double steal with Matschiner to produce a second score for the Panthers in the second.

The Panthers negated a two-run Miners rally in the third when singles from Miller and Carter Wambach came home to roost on Xander Schmitt's two-run double to left.

Drury broke the game open with back-to-back four-run outbursts in the fourth and fifth innings, then added three more tallies in the sixth to put the run rule into play. Following a pair of hit batsmen to open the fourth, Reidelberger brought home both with a rocket into right for a two-run double, before Wambach unloaded on a two-out offering for his first home run of the season--a two-run blast to right-center field that made it a 10-4 game.

In the fifth, Willbrand followed Wambach's lead, powering up for his second round-tripper of the year to extend the DU lead to eight runs. Miller added to the lead with a two-run double later in the rally.

The Panthers added to the lead with three more in the sixth, as Crider singled home a run before a pair of Missouri S&T errors led to two unearned runs and an 11-run DU lead.

Markell Dixon held the Miners at bay over the final three frames to earn his first save of the season. The right-hander allowed just one run on three hits over his 3.0 innings.

In addition to three-hit games by Crider and Miller once again, Bain added a 2-for-4 night, while Wambach (2-for-5), Colin McClure (2-for-4) and Willbrand (2-for-3) each finished with two-hit efforts as well. Willbrand scored three times and drove in two more, while Reidelberger added three RBIs.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Drury Invitational concludes Sunday (March 1) morning with a 10:30 a.m., contest featuring Indianapolis and Washburn at Mark Worley Field. The Panthers are slated to play a 3 p.m., non-conference contest against Missouri Southern Tuesday (March 3) afternoon in Joplin.
