Panthers Complete Series Sweep of UAH to Stay Perfect

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — An 18-hit offensive outburst powered Drury baseball to a 14-7 victory Saturday and a season-opening series sweep of UAH at Charger Park. Caleb Briggs drove in four runs with a 4-for-6 afternoon at the plate, and four additional Drury hitters registered multi-hit performances to complete the Panthers' three-game sweep of the Chargers.

In addition to Briggs' effort, Logan Reidelberger went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Jackson Crider added three hits and drove in two runs to fuel the Panthers' attack. On the mound Joey Funk (1-0) followed a strong start by Nick Panagos with 4 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win, permitting just two runs on six hits.

With the victory, the Panthers logged their first 3-0 start since 2022, when Drury won its first 10 games of the season.

Drury overcame a two-run first inning by UAH, taking the lead for good with a four-run second inning that was highlighted by Landon Willbrand's two-run triple. A wild pitch brought Willbrand home with the go-ahead run, before Connor Bain's two-out single drove home Colin McClure with the first of his three runs scored on the day.

The Panthers broke the game open with three runs in the third, thanks to a Briggs RBI single and Crider's two-out, two-run single that gave DU a 7-2 advantage. Drury extended its lead to nine runs with another big rally in the fourth, this time using another Briggs run-scoring hit and Reidelberger's two-run single to make it an 11-2 game.

After the Chargers' two-run first, Panagos settled into a groove to hold the home club scoreless for three consecutive innings. The right-hander struck out three and scattered seven hits over his four-plus innings.

UAH mounted a threat in the fifth, putting its first three batters aboard before Funk relieved Panagos. A Panther error brought in a pair of Charger runs, and Ian Reagan's ground ball to short plated a third to pull UAH back to within six runs.

Funk held the Chargers (1-5) in check through the seventh, giving his offense time to click once more. Briggs led off the top of the seventh with his third hit of the day, then came around on Reidelberger's one-out double to right-center for a 12-6 DU lead. Briggs delivered a final blow to UAH's comeback bid in the eighth, driving a two-run single to center after Luke Matschiner and Xander Schmitt came through with back-to-back singles to open the inning.

UAH put single runs on the board in the eighth and ninth frames, but Klayton Kiser put the finishing touches on the victory and the sweep with a pair of strikeouts to close out the ninth.

Schmitt contributed a career-best three hits and three runs scored, while Matschiner recorded his second two-hit effort at the plate in as many days.
