Drury Splits Fifth Straight Doubleheader

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury and Emporia State split on Wednesday afternoon in Springfield after the Panthers had a big third inning of game one for Drury's 10th win of the season.
 
GAME ONE – Drury 5, Emporia State 4
Emporia State struck first in game one. After a leadoff ground out in the second inning, Addison Callaway homered to left field for the game's first run. Drury was able to avoid the Hornets adding any more runs.
 
Gabrielle Bax tied the game at one in the bottom of the second inning on a double that scored Claire Nelson from second.
 
Drury added four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Landry Cochran loaded the bases with one out to bring up Avery Budde. The first pitch Budde saw, she would drive to center field for a sacrifice fly to score Isabel Ervin. Kaley Adzick and Cochran would score the next at-bat after Claire Nelson singled to center field to take a 5-1 advantage.
 
Another home run from Emporia State tightened the game in the top of the fourth, 5-3.
 
Emporia would threaten in the fifth, but Kaley Adzick and the Drury defense would leave the Hornets stranded on base.
 
The offensive pressure from the Hornets continued into the sixth inning. Three singles in the first four batters of the sixth inning brought up Sydney Wagner. Wagner would knock in Leslie Ramos in. Emporia could not add another run and still sat a run shy of Drury's five runs.
 
Drury could not add insurance, and Emporia could not tie the game at five, giving the Panthers the 5-4 win.
 
GAME ONE NOTES
  • The Panthers had nine hits in the game compared to the Hornets' ten hits.
  • Landry Cochran, Claire Nelson, and Kirsten Peterson each had two in the game.
  • Drury's lone double came from Gabrielle Bax.
  • Nelson led Drury with two RBIs.
  • Addison Callaway had two hits, including a home run, for Emporia State.
  • Kaley Adzick recorded the win in the complete game pitched. Adzick struck out three batters in the win.
  • Izzy Sloan was the losing pitcher for Emporia.
  • Drury only had one lead-off batter reach base in game one.
  • With runners in scoring position, the Panthers had four hits. Emporia State had two hits in ten opportunities.
  • The Panthers did not strike out in the batter's box.
 
GAME TWO – Emporia State 10, Drury 3
After a scoreless first inning, Emporia opened the game up with a four-run top of the second inning. The Hornets had five hits in the inning, all singles.
 
Emporia grew its lead to nine runs in the third inning on the Hornets' second five-hit inning of the game.
 
Brie Chilton was the second pitcher to come out of the Drury bullpen in the third inning and shut the Hornets down. Chilton allowed only two hits in the final 4.1 innings.
 
The Panthers got on the board in the bottom of the third after Claire Nelson and Kaley Adzick reached with two outs. Gabrielle Bax would drive in Adzick after an error from the Hornets in the field.
 
Both offenses went quiet until the bottom of the fifth when Drury added two runs to avoid being run-ruled. Emma Niemczyk and Landry Cochran both scored in the inning, having back-to-back singles to lead off the inning.
 
The final run of the game scored in the top of the sixth when Brynley Smith doubled to score Taryn Burkhardt from second.
 
Drury had one hit in the final two innings, falling 10-3.
 
GAME TWO NOTES
  • Drury had five hits in the game, all five from the top four in the Panthers' lineup.
  • Emma Niemczyk had two hits.
  • Five Hornets had at least two hits in the game.
  • Jordyn Foley was the losing pitcher, falling to 5-5. She was only able to pitch two innings, allowing four runs and five hits.
  • Natalie Wilks could only record two outs for Drury before Brie Chilton had to come in.
  • Chilton went 4.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run. She was the only Drury pitcher to have a strikeout.
  • Morgan Tomlinson went 5.0 innings for Emporia, striking out two and allowing three runs.
  • Drury has now split five straight doubleheaders.
