Panthers Earn Split with Saints Behind Shutdown Pitching

ST. LOUIS – Shutdown pitching in game two of a doubleheader at Maryville earned Drury a split with the Saints to improve to 11-14 and 3-3 in the GLVC.

GAME ONE – Maryville 4, Drury 0
Jumping to the bottom of the second, a leadoff error for Drury gave Maryville an early base runner. A single and a hit-by-pitch to follow loaded the bases for Payton Deakin. Deakin put the ball in play and scored Emily Erb for the Saints. Behind Deakin in the lineup was Jenna Kosnoff; she earned a four pitch walk to reload the bases. A first pitch hit by pitch on Mandi Lenon pushed in Marley Williamson for the Saints' second run. Kaley Adzick left the bases loaded as she struck out the next two batters.

Drury and Maryville went down in order until the top of the sixth. With two outs, Isabel Ervin singled up the middle for the Panthers' second hit of the game; she advanced to second on a wild pitch. Landry Cochran worked a walk, but both were left on the base paths.

With the Panthers not able to convert with two runners on, Maryville added two more to their total in the bottom of the sixth, aided by an error in the field by Drury and a two-out double from Jenna Kosnoff.

Trailing by four, the Panthers had to find life in their offense. After a ground out and a strikeout, Haley Bryant walked. Bryant advanced to second on a wild pitch but was left there as the game ended on a fly out to center field.

GAME ONE NOTES
  • Drury had two hits in the game, one from Kaley Adzick and the other from Isabel Ervin.
  • Kaley Adzick held the Maryville offense to four hits, two of them from Mandi Lenon.
  • Adzick threw a complete game, getting the loss. Three of the four runs scored were unearned to Adzick, as she struck out eight, tying her career high.
  • Nora Johnson struck out ten Drury batters in her complete game win.
  • Drury had only one leadoff hitter reach base in their seven at-bats.
  • The Panthers had five opportunities with a runner in scoring position; they had zero hits in those situations.

TWO – Drury 3, Maryville 1
Following a slow game one offensively, Emma Niemczyk opened the game quickly. On the first pitch of the game, Niemczyk singled into center field. She was followed by a double from Isabel Ervin to score Niemczyk and the game's first run.

The Saints threatened in the bottom half of the first in response to the Panthers. A leadoff walk and two consecutive singles loaded the bases for Laila Ruiz, the GLVC's leader in home runs for freshmen. Ruiz lined into a double play to Reece Anderson. Jordyn Foley got Drury out of the jam with a fly out to end the inning.

Into the fourth inning, Drury eyed another run to extend their lead. Claire Nelson singled on the first pitch she saw, bringing up Madi Divis, who was pinch hitting for Kaley Adzick. Divis doubled on a 3-0 pitch to score Nelson. The Panthers' next three went down.

Maryville answered Drury's one-run fourth with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch to score Emily Erb.

The one-run advantage was not enough for the Panthers. Emma Niemczyk reached on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning. An error at first base from Maryville put Niemczyk on third and Isabel Ervin on first before Ervin stole second. Landry Cochran's sac fly scored Niemczyk for Drury's third run.

Entering the bottom of the fifth, Brie Chilton replaced Jordyn Foley in the circle. In the final three innings, Chilton did not allow a hit and struck out five Saints for the save.

GAME TWO NOTES
  • The Panthers had eight hits in the win, two of them from Gabrielle Bax in the nine-hole.
  • Madi Divis had one pinch hit at-bat for Drury. She led the Panthers with two RBIs.
  • Landry Cochran and Isabel Ervin each drove in one run.
  • Maryville had four hits, three from the top five hitters.
  • Jordyn Foley was the winning pitcher. Foley went four innings, allowing four hits, one run, and striking out two.
  • Brie Chilton recorded her first career save in three innings of relief. Chilton also struck out five batters, a career high.
  • Cora Boyle was the losing pitcher for Maryville. Boyle got through three innings, allowing five hits, two runs, and striking out two.
  • The split was Drury's sixth straight split. The Panthers' game two win was only their second win in game two of a doubleheader this season.
