Red-Hot Panthers Complete Series Sweep of Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Drury baseball used another big day from its offense to complete a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series sweep of Lincoln with an 18-6 victory Sunday afternoon at Vivion Field.

The Panthers scored in all seven innings and overcame an early one-run deficit by plating 10-straight runs over a three-inning stretch to establish a double-digit lead. Connor Bain and Jackson Crider drove in three runs apiece to lead the Drury offense, which totaled at least 18 runs for the third time in the series.

Drury jumped on top via a two-out rally in the first to score the game's first run. After Logan Reidelberger coaxed a walk, Bain and Greydon Miller delivered back-to-back singles to put the Panthers on the board against Lincoln starting pitcher Hunter Mitchell.

The Blue Tigers answered with a two-out scoring opportunity in the home half against Drury starting pitcher Coleman Morrison, as a walk, a hit batsman and a passed ball on a third strike combined to bring in a pair of runs for a 2-1 Lincoln advantage.

But Drury responded in the top of the second, striking for five runs against Mitchell and reliever Jonah Claborn. After Jackson Edwards singled and Landon Willbrand was hit by a pitch to spark the threat, Luke Matschiner's fielder's choice grounder to short brought home the tying run. Bain then put the Panthers on top to stay with a run-scoring double to left, before Miller's bouncer to third was misplayed for a two-run error and Carter Wambach doubled home a run to hand DU a 6-2 lead.

Crider's three-run homer highlighted the third inning, before an Edwards sacrifice fly and a Willbrand RBI-grounder put two more runs on the board for Drury in the fourth. Bain launched his third round-tripper of the weekend -- a two-run shot -- as part of DU's three-run rally in the fifth that stretched the advantage to 14-3.

Drury scored again in the sixth on a Reidelberger double -- one of eight extra-base hits by the Panthers on the day -- before putting their final three runs on the board in the seventh. Miller, who tied a Drury single-game record by scoring five runs in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, trotted home with his fourth run of the day on a Caleb Briggs double. Colin McClure brought in a run with a fielder's choice grounder, and Max Brown capped the DU scoring with a sac fly to center for an 18-3 lead.

Morrison (3-1) earned the victory after allowing just two earned runs on four hits over the first four innings. DU relievers Markell Dixon and Klayton Kiser each turned in a 1-2-3 inning, before Conner Flieg worked the seventh to secure the victory.

Bain led the Drury offense with three RBIs as part of a 3-for-5 afternoon, capping a weekend in which he drove in 12 runs by going 9-for-15 with eight extra-base hits. Crider finished his afternoon 2-for-5 with three RBIs, and Miller scored four times and drove in another run with a 2-for-4 effort.

Reidelberger (2-for-3) and Wambach (2-for-3) also contributed two-hit games to help fuel the Panthers' 14-hit attack.

Drury returns to Springfield to open a four-game GLVC home series against Maryville, beginning with a 5 p.m. Thursday (April 2) contest at Mark Worley Field at Meador Park.
