SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Kaley Adzick and
Jordyn Foley each reached career milestones in Sunday's doubleheader against No. 9 Indianapolis. The Greyhounds swept the Panthers 5-4 and 3-1.
GAME ONE – No. 9 Indianapolis 5, Drury 4
Riding a seven-game winning streak, Indianapolis entered the game with its bats on fire, and that continued into the first game of the doubleheader. Two consecutive doubles followed by a triple in the first innings gave the Greyhound an early two-run advantage.
The early deficit did not phase, Drury. The Panthers scored one on an RBI double from
Avery Budde to drive
Emma Niemczyk from second.
Indianapolis added to their total at the top of the second on three hits for three runs, holding a 5-1 lead.
Trailing by four, Drury needed a spark in their lineup.
Emma Niemczyk was that spark. Niemczyk led the bottom of the third off with a solo home run, the only run for Drury in the inning, but it put life into the Drury bench and pulled momentum away from the ninth-ranked Greyhounds.
Both offenses went quiet until the fifth, when the Panthers chipped away at the Indianapolis lead with another run. This one came courtesy of an RBI from
Landry Cochran, who forced an error in the field to score Niemczyk with two outs in the inning.
The Panthers added a fourth run in the bottom of the sixth inning behind Niemczyk's two-out double to score
Jordan Meng from second, who was pinch running for
Kaley Adzick.
Kaley Adzick, in the circle, shut Indianapolis down at the top of the seventh, giving Drury a shot to win it in the bottom half of the inning, down 5-4.
Haley Bryand and
Landry Cochran would reach with one out on a walk and a single. The next two Panthers would go down on three total pitches to end the game.
GAME ONE NOTES
- Drury had eight hits in the game, half of them from Emma Niemczyk. She was a triple shy of the cycle. Four hits in a single game is a Drury single-game record; it has happened 31 other times in program history.
- Indianapolis had 12 hits in the win, three from Cara Cooper.
- Both Kaley Adzick and Cheyenne Eads pitched complete games.
- Adzick struck out a career-high 10 batters; she is the first Drury pitcher with at least 10 strikeouts since Kristina Bettis struck out 11 against Illinois Springfield in the 2023 GLVC Tournament. Adzick has now moved ten strikeouts away from 200 career strikeouts.
- 140 of Adzick's 200 career strikeouts have been in her time at Drury. She is now three away from moving into the top ten of Drury career strikeouts.
- Eads struck out three batters in the win. She improves to 16-1 on the season.
- Drury had only one hit with two outs in the game, that being the Emma Niemczyk double in the sixth inning.
- Kaley Adzick and the Drury defense tightened up when Indianapolis had two outs and runners in scoring position. The Greyhounds were 0-for-5 in those instances, three of which resulted in strikeouts.
- Half of Adzick's strikeouts came with runners on base.
- Drury dropped to 7-7 in one-run games this season.
GAME TWO – No. 9 Indianapolis 3, Drury 1
Similar to game one, Indianapolis struck in the first inning, this time only limited to one run, an unearned run after an error from the Panthers.
The Greyhounds added to their lead in the third inning. Cara Cooper led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Cheyenne Eads. Cooper would score two batters later courtesy of a single from Maya Rodriguez.
Drury's bat woke up for game two in the bottom of the fourth, trailing 2-0. A first-pitch single from
Avery Budde gave the Panthers an early runner. Budde was run for by
Jordan Meng. After a flyout,
Reece Anderson would work a seven-pitch at-bat and on the eighth double to left center to score Meng from first, bringing the game within one run.
One run was too close for Indianapolis as the Greyhounds loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth inning. Brooklyn Willis would score Paige Vickery on a sacrifice fly, but
Jordyn Foley was able to get out of the jam with limited damage.
Down to their final three outs, Drury needed two runs to tie or three for the win.
Reece Anderson flew out to start the inning.
Kelsey Palmer would pinch hit and reach on an infield single, then chaos would ensue.
Claire Nelson popped the ball up to the infield, making Palmer retreat to first as the Greyhounds dropped the ball. A leaping save by Cara Cooper at shortstop to save the ball from being sailed into centerfield, as she got Palmer out at second, and Nelson was able to reach first. The game would end on a strikeout, giving Indianapolis the 3-1 win and sweep.
GAME TWO NOTES
- Drury had six hits in game two, led by Avery Budde with two.
- With a hit in both games, Avery Budde's hitting streak has run to nine games, the longest of any Panther this season.
- Indianapolis had seven hits, two from each of Cara Cooper, Maya Rodriguez, and Paige Vickery.
- Jordyn Foley was the losing pitcher in game two. She allowed three runs, one unearned, walked three, and struck out a career-high six batters. With Foley's first strikeout of the game, she reached 100 strikeouts in her Drury career.
- Caitlin Bunte improved to 15-1 in the circle for Indianapolis. She struck out four batters and walked none in her complete game.
- Drury was 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position in game two.
- Indianapolis was 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
- Two lead-off hitters for Drury reached base in the game, and four reached for Indianapolis.
- The sweep was Drury's first time being swept in a doubleheader.
