Panthers Fall to No. 25 Augustana in Series Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — No. 25 Augustana rode a pair of big innings to a series-opening 15-9 victory over No. 18 Drury baseball Friday afternoon at Mark Worley Field at Meador Park. The Vikings struck for six runs in the second inning, then added eight more in the fourth to build a double-digit lead that the Panthers would not seriously threaten.

The Vikings scored 14-straight runs after the Panthers (8-4) used back-to-back two-out hits from Connor Bain and Greydon Miller to put the first two runs of the afternoon on the board in the first against Augustana starting pitcher Mariano Gomez (2-0).

Brandon Weigel's three-run homer highlighted Augustana's second-inning rally, after a leadoff double by Troy Berg and a pair of walks set up the rally. Lind drove in his first run of the day by beating out a bunt single, before Kobe Eikmeier brought home a pair of baserunners with a one-out single. Weigel followed with a long drive that cleared the wall in left-center for a 6-2 Augustana lead.

Augustana (9-4) hit a trio of home runs and touched up Drury pitching for 12 hits in plating a season-high run total by a DU opponent. Bjorn Lind led the way, finishing 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including two home runs in the Vikings' eight-run fourth -- a leadoff shot and a two-run blast to cap the rally and stretch the margin to 14-2.

The Panthers chipped away at the deficit, scoring in four consecutive innings to close the gap to 15-9 by the end of the seventh. Miller doubled and scored on Landon Willbrand's ground ball in the fourth, before Bain blasted his fourth round-tripper of the season -- a two-run shot -- in the fifth. Next, Luke Matschiner came around to score on a sixth-inning wild pitch after his leadoff single started the inning.

Jackson Crider dealt the Vikings a key blow in the seventh with his two-out, three-run homer that trimmed the margin to six runs.

But that's as close as Drury would get down the stretch, with the duo of Myles Hanson and Maddox Foss combining to hold the Panthers scoreless for the final 2 1/3 innings to close out the victory.

Crider led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of walks and three RBIs, while Bain added two hits and drove in three as well. Both Miller and Logan Reidelberger added two-hit performances to round out the Panthers' nine-hit attack.

On the mound, freshman left-hander Landon Martin turned in 4 2/3 innings of solid relief for Drury, permitting just one run on two hits.

Drury and Augustana will continue their series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (March 7), before concluding the weekend with a single contest Sunday (March 8) at 1 p.m.
