Panthers Drop Doubleheader, Series to No. 25 Augustana

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Despite being held in check for much of the afternoon, No. 25 Augustana's offense came to life to notch a 4-3 win in game one of its doubleheader with No. 18 Drury baseball, before a 10th-inning rally delivered a 16-13 win in the nightcap and a series sweep of the Panthers Sunday afternoon at Mark Worley Field at Meador Park.

Logan Reidelberger led Drury, finishing the day 3-for-8 with a pair of RBIs, while both Jackson Crider and Jackson Edwards homered for the Panthers, who saw their losing streak extend to five games.

Game 1 - Augustana 4, Drury 3 (7 inn.)
Despite limiting the Vikings to four hits and erasing a two-run deficit, the Panthers dropped the front end of the doubleheader, as Augustana snapped a 3-3 deadlock with a two-out rally in the sixth. The Vikings strung together back-to-back singles, with Brandon Weigel's base hit to left-center bringing in the go-ahead run.

The Vikings 1-2 punch of Ashton Michek and Ryan Clementi (1-0) held the Panthers in check throughout the contest, permitting just five hits while striking out seven DU hitters.

Augustana seized control with a pair of first-inning runs, scoring on Cal Schmelzl's sacrifice fly and a two-out homer by Carter Heinsch for an early 2-0 advantage. The Panthers responded with a run in the home half of the first when Luke Matschiner singled and stole second, then came around on Reidelberger's single to right-center.

The visitors manufactured a run in the second, putting Kobe Eikmeier in scoring position via a walk and a stolen base, before a passed ball moved him to third, ahead of Troy Berg's sac fly that made it a 3-1 game.

DU put together a two-out rally of its own to even the score in the third, with Matschiner once again playing a critical role. After Michek quickly dispatched the first two hitters of the inning, Matschiner coaxed a walk, then swiped second before Jackson Crider was hit by a pitch. A Vikings error moved both players into scoring position, and Connor Bain brought them home with a base hit to center, knotting the score at 3-3.

From that point, both pitching staffs controlled the contest, with DU's Markell Dixon (0-1) combining with Caden Crask-Weeks for nine strikeouts, and Clementi taking over for Michek to start the fourth. The Vikings right-hander followed with 4.0 shutout innings of two-hit relief.

Game 2 - Augustana 16, Drury 13 (10 inn.)
The Vikings (12-4), who scored four times in the 12th inning of Saturday's 8-4 victory over Drury, came through with another four-run, extra-inning rally to complete the series sweep with a 16-13 win in 10 innings.

Drury (8-7) scored three times in the fourth and six runs in the sixth to build what appeared to be a comfortable 9-3 cushion. Edwards belted the go-ahead three-run homer to give the Panthers a 6-3 lead, before Crider unloaded on a two-run blast for his third home run of the season to highlight the sixth inning.

On the mound, Nick Panagos kept the Vikings in check through six frames, scattering three runs on five hits while striking out five batters.

But Augustana responded in a big way, scoring nine times in the seventh inning to wipe out the six-run Drury lead and take a 12-9 advantage.

Drury answered with three runs in the home half to even the score, as Greydon Miller tripled home a run before a Paul Pratte sac fly and a Vikings error chased home two more.

DU reliever Klayton Kiser shut down the Augustana offense for two innings, but ran into trouble in the 10th, when Eikmeier singled, stole second and came home on Berg's RBI-single. After a fielder's choice and a walk loaded the bases, freshman Hayden Linton picked up a strikeout for the second out of the inning, but Bjorn Lind then cleared the bases for a three-run double that gave Augustana a 16-12 lead.

The Panthers mounted one last threat in the bottom of the 10th, when Landon Willbrand walked and Matschiner doubled to set up Reidelberger's run-scoring ground ball.

But Vikings reliever Jadon Bast coaxed the game-ending liner to right off the bat of Bain to wrap up the victory. That effort helped make a winner of reliever Jack Sutton (2-0), who limited the Panthers to one run over 2 2/3 hitless innings.

Eikmeier led the Vikings with four hits and four runs scored, while Lind finished with five RBIs.

Miller paced the Panthers' offense with a pair of run-scoring hits, while Edwards drove in three runs.
