Jewell Sweeps Drury with Comeback Wins

LIBERTY , Mo. – William Jewell took two from Drury with late-inning comebacks in Liberty. The losses drop Drury to 22-25 and improve the Cardinals to 19-25.
 
GAME ONE – William Jewell 3, Drury 2
The final road trip of the season started off on the right foot for Drury. On the fourth pitch of the game, Emma Niemczyk gave Drury a 1-0 lead with her third home run of the season.
 
Following the Niemczyk homer, the Panther offense was quiet for the next five innings, only recording two more hits through the sixth inning.
 
It took until the fifth inning for the Jewell offense to get a beat on Jordyn Foley in the circle. A one-out error in the field for Drury put Emma Jane Ogle on first. Ogle was followed by a single and a double, which Ogle and Sheyenne Kelch scored on. A walk and a groundout put two runners in scoring position. The Panthers let a passed ball get by to score Alexa Almejo for the Cardinals' third run of the game.
 
Down to their final three outs of the game, Claire Nelson led the seventh inning off with a single. Isabel Ervin reached on a fielder's choice after the out was recorded at second, the next at-bat. Ervin would score from first on a Kelsey Palmer double. Palmer advanced to third following a single from Kaley Adzick; both runners were left stranded on base after Drury's next two batters went down, giving Jewell the 3-2 win.
 
GAME ONE NOTES
  • Drury outhit Jewell six to three.
  • Emma Niemczyk and Kelsey Palmer each had two hits in the loss. Those two were also the only two with an RBI.
  • The homer for Niemczyk was her third career homer.
  • Two of the three hits from Jewell came from the bottom two in their lineup, Sheyenne Kelch and Alexa Almejo.
  • Jordyn Foley threw a complete game in the loss. Foley allowed three hits, three runs (one earned, and struck out four batters.
  • Raegan Bennett was the winning pitcher for the Cardinals after 6.1 innings of work. Katie Heckman recorded the save.
  • Three Drury leadoff batters reached base in the game, with only one scoring, Emma Niemczyk.
  • Reece Anderson eclipsed 300 career assists with her second of four assists in the game.
 
 
GAME TWO – William Jewell 2, Drury 1
After a pitchers' duel in game one, the second game of the doubleheader started the same way. There were a total of four hits in the first three innings, two of them were doubles from Landry Cochran and Kelsey Palmer.
 
Drury was the first to strike in the top of the fourth with a lead-off homer from Isabel Ervin. The Panthers could not add insurance in the inning.
 
It took until the bottom of the sixth for the next run to come across. Back-to-back singles and a sac bunt put two runners in scoring position for Jewell and Alexa Almejo. After three foul balls, Almejo doubled to left center to clear the bases and take the 2-1 lead for the Cardinals.
 
Drury was able to get one base runner on in the top of the seventh but was unable to tie it, dropping game two 2-1.
 
GAME TWO NOTES
  • Landry Cochran led Drury with two hits from the second spot in the lineup.
  • Alexa Alemjo had two of the seven hits for Jewell.
  • Kaley Adzick was the losing pitcher for Drury. Adzick threw a complete game with four strikeouts.
  • Jewell had three pitchers throw. Oliva Wood went four innings, and Avrey Reynolds pitched the middle two innings. Katie Heckman closed the game for the seventh inning.
  • With both losses, Drury drops to 7-12 in one-run games this season.
 
UP NEXT
The Panthers finish their regular season road slate at Rockhurst on Sunday, with the first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for noon.
