Panthers, Hillcats Split Midweek Doubleheader

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury started the final week of the regular season with a non-conference split against Rogers State on Wednesday in Springfield.

GAME ONE – Drury 1, Rogers State 0
A game one pitching duel only saw multiple hits in three and a half innings. The first threat of the game came from Rogers State at the top of the second inning. Jaden Jordan hit a lead off single for the game's first base runner. She advanced to second two at-bats later on the Raelle Gorman single with one out. Jordyn Foley got out of the early jam after Mariah Belzer lined out to Kaley Adzick to force an unassisted double play.

The Hillcats threatened again in the fourth inning. A fielder's choice, wild pitch, and error put runners on the corners for Rogers State with one out. Foley got out of the inning without allowing a run following a short fly out and ground out.

Drury showed their first offensive life in game one in the sixth inning. Emma Niemczyk led off the inning with a single and stole second. Niemczyk would take third, and on her attempt, the Hillcats shortstop, Mariah Belzer, dropped the throw. The ball got just far enough away for Niemczyk to come home and score the game's first and only run.

Rogers State, down to their final chances, could only get one hit in the seventh inning, dropping the first game of the doubleheader 1-0.

GAME ONE NOTES
  • The Hillcats outhit Drury six to four.
  • Kaley Adzick was responsible for two of the Drury four hits.
  • Kelsey Palmer had the game's only extra-base hit, with a fifth-inning double.
  • Rylee Bush and Raelle Gorman each had two hits in the game.
  • Emma Niemczyk had two steals in the win. It is the second time this season she has stolen two bases, the first since the second game of the season (Jan. 30 against Missouri Western).
  • Drury's Jordyn Foley won her 12th game of the season, the tenth most in a single season at Drury. It was her 22nd career win, seventh most in program history.
  • In the game, Foley struck out two batters, both looking.
  • Harly Culie was the losing pitcher. Culie struck out ten batters in the game.
  • Gabrielle Bax had seven assists in the game, moving into eighth in a single season at Drury with 124.
  • Rogers State left six runners stranded in game one, five of them in scoring position.
  • Four of Drury's six lead-off hitters reached base in the game.
  • The win ended Drury's three-game skid against Rogers State.

GAME TWO – Rogers State 2, Drury 1
Similar to game one, Rogers State got runners on base but was unable to capitalize. The Hillcats left six runners on base in the first four innings, including runners on third in three of the four innings.

After Avery Budde put Rogers State down on three pitches in the top of the third, the Panthers struck first in the bottom of the third inning. A lead off walk from Gabrielle Bax, followed by a single from Emma Niemczyk, allowed Landry Cochran to sac bunt and put two runners in scoring position with one out. Claire Nelson saw four pitches and on the fifth one hit a fly ball, deep enough, to left field to score Bax on the sac fly and give Drury the 1-0 lead.

Not a single Panther reached base after the third inning, 13 straight retired.

Chloe Cardona led off the top of the seventh inning for Rogers State with a double to give the Hillcats life, trailing by one. Baylee King laid a sac bunt to advance Cardona. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Jaden Jordan. She would hit a soft infield single to knot the game at one and leave the bases loaded. Saylor Brown was able to lift the ball for the sacrifice fly and score Raelle Gorman for the game-winning run, 2-1.

GAME TWO NOTES
  • Rogers State had five hits in the win, from five different batters.
  • Drury had two hits, one from Emma Niemczyk and Kelsey Palmer.
  • Kinsley Hill was the winning pitcher for the Hillcats, punching out nine Panthers.
  • Avery Budde got the start in the circle. Budde struck out three batters in six innings pitched.
  • Kaley Adzick was the losing pitcher after giving up the second run in her lone inning.
  • Gabrielle Bax moved into the top five of single-season assists at Drury after recording seven more in game two, now at 131. Bax was the only Panther to record an assist in the game.
  • Emma Niemczyk's two hits in the doubleheader moved her to fifth most hits for a Drury freshman with 44.
  • Only one Panther reached base as a lead-off hitter, in the third inning, when Drury scored.
  • It was only Drury's third loss this season when they were leading after the sixth inning, now 19-3.
