Panthers Fall to Miners in GLVC Tournament, 8-4

MARION, Ill. — Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season champion Missouri S&T rode a shutdown mound effort and a pair of big innings to an 8-4 victory over Drury baseball in quarterfinal round of the GLVC Baseball Championship Thursday afternoon at Mtn Dew Park.

Missouri S&T right-hander Dylan Bates was perfect through five frames and permitted just two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out eight Panthers over his 6 2/3 innings en route to his GLVC-leading 10th victory of the season.

Bates and reliever Dylan Wipf combined to hold Drury to just two runs on three hits through the first eight innings, preserving what was a two-run cushion. The Miners (33-16) put the game on ice with a four-run eighth, highlighted by two-out RBI-singles by Drew Baugus and Bricen Smith.

Drury (32-20) scratched out a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but Wipf locked down the victory and his fifth save to send the top-seeded Miners to a Friday matchup with the winner of the No. 2 UMSL and No. 3 Indianapolis contest, slated for Thursday afternoon.

Baugus led the Miners with a 3-for-5 performance, while Smith added two hits and scored two runs to help pace the Missouri S&T offense.

With Bates in control throughout the first five innings, the Miners built a 4-0 lead thanks in large part to the work of Baugus, who bunted for hits and scored in each of Missouri S&T's two scoring rallies. Baugus set up the Miners' first threat of the day with a successful bunt to the right side, before stealing second, then coaxing an errant pickoff attempt to move to third. He trotted home with the game's first run on Garrett Meyer's sacrifice liner to right for a 1-0 Miners lead.

Drury starter Caden Crask-Weeks nearly matched Bates over the first four frames, as the junior left-hander rebounded by striking out seven hitters while allowing just one hit over the same stretch.

But the Miners capitalized on a Panther error to start the fifth, coaxing four walks from Drury hurlers to plate three runs in the inning. After Keaton Scott reached base to open the inning, Baugus beat out a bunt single for the second time, and Smith drew the first free pass of the rally to load the bases. Three more walks forced home runs, as the Miners stretched their lead to 4-0.

Held without a baserunner over the first five innings, the Panthers offense came to life in a span of just two pitches in the sixth. Xander Schmitt broke up Bates' perfect start by reaching on a chopper to the left side that went for an error, and Colin McClure belted a no-doubt, two-run homer to left-center field on the next pitch to slice the Missouri S&T lead in half.

The Panthers put together another scoring threat in seventh, when a Connor Bain single and a walk to Caleb Briggs put a pair of runners aboard, before a two-out walk to Schmitt loaded the bases. Wipf then entered the fray and immediately extinguished the rally by inducing a ground ball to second on his first offering to McClure.

Crask-Weeks (2-4) suffered the setback for the Panthers, despite fanning seven Miners and allowing just one earned run (four total) on only three hits over 4.0 innings.
