Soccer Panthers Come Up Just Short In 2-1 NCAA Tournament Loss At Top Seed Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. - The second most successful season in Drury Soccer history came to a close on Sunday, when top seed and nationally fifth-ranked Quincy broke a late tie and held off the fourth-seeded Panthers for a 2-1 victory in the NCAA Division II tournament's Round of 32 here on Sunday at Legends Stadium.

The Hawks (19-1-2), in winning their first NCAA tourney game in the program's history, advance to the Sweet 16 next weekend in Tahlequah, Okla.

Drury closed with a final 16-5-0 mark, with the 16 victories ranking behind the 21 wins in 2009 by coach Ryan Swan's inaugural team as the most in the program's NCAA-II history.

9032Xhovani Dokaj's goal in the 66th minute proved the difference, as he banged home a shot from 18 feet out that caught the inside of the right post and kicked back into the left corner of the goal for his ninth game-winner of the season.

It came just 11 minutes after Brett Steere had tied the match at 1-all at 54:15 with his third goal of the season after scoring off an Alec Nagel assist from 18 yards out.

After a scoreless opening half, Quincy got on the board first with a penalty-kick goal by Steve McAnany at 49:03, his third of the year.

Quincy had 15 shots in the contest to 10 by the Panthers, as the Hawks held a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. It was the second one-goal differential match between the squads this season, after the Hawks had rallied to beat DU 3-2 on the same field on September 28.

"It's a tough loss to take," Swan said. "I thought that it was a good game. The guys responded well to the penalty call. I really feel for the seniors right now, but they put in a good performance and can be proud of their careers here at Drury."

Drew Duncan had two saves for Quincy and Logan Ponche finished his Panthers career with a three-save effort for a DU squad losing 10 high-quality seniors to graduation.

This year's senior group finished their four-year careers at Drury with a combined record of 54-25-2, with two NCAA tournament appearances.
