Coach
Molly Miller's nationally seventh-ranked Drury Lady Panthers will take on their second Top 10 foe of the year to highlight the Doubletree Hotel/Houlihan's Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
Drury (3-1) will face No. 10 Pitt State (6-0) at 5:30 p.m. Friday on the annual "Free Friday" promotion at The O', with all fans admitted for free to the four games on the agenda that day, including the nationally fourth-ranked DU men taking on Cameron at 3:15 p.m. "Free Friday" will include the annual "12 Days of Christmas" halftime giveaways of everything from restaurant gift cards to autographed items to youth basketball camp entries for all fans who sign up upon entering the arena.
The Lady Panthers will then take on another perennial national power in Northeastern State at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at The O'.
A DU squad that's played one of the toughest preseason schedules in the nation might face its ultimate test - and definitely its tallest - so far in the visit from the Gorillas in Friday's opener. Pitt State, under the direction of head coach Lane Lord, has run away to its 6-0 start, including a 102-45 win at GLVC member Truman State in Kirksville on Wednesday night. PSU is averaging 84 points and allowing only 55 points per game through six games, led by the 19.3 points of 5-11 senior returning First Team All-America selection Lizzy Jeronimus.
Cathy Brugman, a 6-1 junior, adds 13.8 points and Kylie Gafford, a 6-2 junior, contributes 13.5 points per game for a Gorillas team that is shooting 50 percent from the field while limiting opponents to 35 percent.
The Lady Panthers are coming off a tough 87-79 overtime loss at Washburn on Saturday.
Annie Armstrong had a career-high 24 points and is averaging 21.0 points per game to lead Drury, which receives 13.0 points per game from
Addy Roller and 10.3 points and 11.0 rebounds from
Sanayika Shields, who posted double-doubles in Drury's first three games before finishing with nine points and nine rebounds before fouling out at Washburn.
Shelby White is coming off a career-best, 14-rebound effort in the loss to the Ichabods and adds 9.3 points and 7.3 rebounds.
Northeastern State comes into the tourney with a 2-1 overall record, including a 72-67 win at Arkansas-Fort Smith on Tuesday. Coach Randy Gipson's RiverHawks received 16 points and eight rebounds from 5-7 sophomore Mya Walker in the win. Chelsea Beathard, a 5-8 senior, averages 13.3 points and Fontana Tate, a 5-5 senior, adds 11.0 points for Northeastern State, which will take on Rockhurst at 7:45 p.m. on Friday at The O' before facing the Lady Panthers on Saturday.
Rockhurst, which will play Pitt State on Saturday at 7:45 p.m., is 1-2 overall, but picked up a 65-60 exhibition win over NCAA Division I Missouri-Kansas City on Tuesday.
Drury leads Pitt State 4-1 and Northeastern State 9-4 in the all-time series with the teams. The Lady Panthers won 69-67 in two overtimes at NSU last season. Drury hasn't played PSU since the 2006-07 season, when the Lady Panthers won 87-74 at Weiser Gym.
