No. 13 Lady Panthers Roll Past S&T In GLVC Opener

ROLLA - Briana Jones came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points and lead four Lady Panthers in double-figures as No. 13 Drury used an 18-0 spurt to away from Missouri Science and Technology 80-58 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both schools Thursday night at Billy Key Court.

Alice Heinzler and Annie Armstrong added 12 points each and Paige Wilson had 11 points (including 3-for-5 shooting from 3-point range) as the Lady Panthers improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC. S&T fell to 3-3 and 0-1.

The Lady Panthers were clinging to a 30-26 with 3:20 left in the opening half before finishing the half with an 8-0 run - sparked by a couple of baskets from the Wichita State transfer Jones - for a 38-26 lead at the break. Drury then opened the second half with a 10-0 run to start the second half, capped by a Wilson trey with 16:00 left, to push the advantage to 48-26.

From there, the Lady Panthers led by as many as 34 points in coasting to the league triumph.

"We were a little cold early ... I don't know if it was bus legs, playing away from home, conference opener jitters, but we came out a little cold early from the outside," DU coach Molly Miller said. "Once we got comfortable and got some inside-out baskets going, we were fine."

Jones played a career-high 25 minutes in her best effort as a Lady Panther.

"She came in and stepped up big when Sanayika and Ana got in foul trouble," Miller said. "We see that all the time in practice ... I expect her to be able to come out and contribute on the offensive end. We're coming to the stage where it's no longer new to her. Now she's kind of found her niche and we're going to rely on her a lot this year."

The Lady Panthers finished 9 of 27 from 3-point range, but hit 6 of 13 treys after halftime on a 45-percent shooting night overall (30 of 67). Drury made 16 of its 29 shots after halftime (55 percent).

The Lady Panthers forced 27 turnovers by the Lady Miners, who matched Drury at 33-apiece on the boards.

Addy Roller had seven assists, six rebounds, six points and two steals for DU.

Jamy Douvier led S&T with nine points.

Drury will take next week off from competition for final exams before resuming action on Monday, December 15 at Central Missouri.

"They know how important finals are ... they're going to take care of business," Miller said.
