LIBERTY -
Cameron Adams scored a season-high 31 points, leading Drury to a 74-57 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over William Jewell Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Center.
Adams was one off his career high of 32 points, set last season against Illinois Springfield, in helping the Panthers improve to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the GLVC, moving back into first place in the West Division.
William Jewell fell to 7-8 and 3-4, and fell victim to a stifling Drury defense in the first half. The Panthers allowed just four Cardinal field goals (4 for 16) over the game's first 20 minutes in racing out to a 39-19 halftime advantage. Adams had 15 points in the half and freshman
Drew Moore scored 10 of his career-high 13 points to help spark Drury to the big lead.
From there, Jewell never really threatened as the Panthers posted their second consecutive blowout victory - they defeated Rockhurst 74-50 on Thursday - following last Saturday's loss at home to No. 6 Bellarmine.Â
The Panthers committed a season-low five turnovers Saturday and had 17 assists on their 26 field goals (26 of 58, 45 percent) while also outrebounding the Cardinals 36-29.
"I'm proud of 'em ... anytime you go on the road in the GLVC and you get a couple of victories, that's good stuff, and we needed to do that," Drury coach
Steve Hesser said. "I thought we came out and defended ... we struggled all day in making buckets and didn't shoot it very good. But we rebounded the basketball better. We're improving in that area, and this is two games in a row that we've done a better job of passing and catching it.
"You go on the road and you only have five turnovers, your guys have been committed on that. This has been a tough place for us to come play."
Moore gave the Panthers an offensive lift by hitting 5 of 9 shots - including 3 of 6 from 3-point range - and grabbing three rebounds in his 17 minutes off the bench.
Adams made 10 of 15 shots, including all 11 of his free-throw attempts, and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds to go with three assists and two steals in his 32 minutes.
"Cam did a nice job today," Hesser said. "We had a lot of guys with two fouls each in the first half, and I thought he stepped up and provided stability as well as communication on the floor, so good job by him."
The Panthers limited Jewell to 44 percent shooting for the game (18 of 41), with most of their damage coming down the stretch with the game well out of reach. Jordan Lewis had 22 points to lead the Cardinals, including six 3-pointers, but got 17 of his points after halftime.
"We're getting more collective on the defensive end," Hesser said. "We didn't guard the last 10 minutes, and that's a discipline thing. But nice overall job by our guys. Now we get to go home and prepare to go back out on the road again next week. I told our guys before we came out that these next two weeks, with four games on the road, would tell us where we are as a basketball team."
Drury continues on the GLVC road next week in St. Louis with games at Maryville on Thursday and Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday. The Panthers return home to host Truman State on Thursday, January 29 (American Cancer Society's "Black Out Cancer" Night) and Saturday, January 31 (Great Southern Bank "Throwback Day").
