Unbeaten No. 7 Indianapolis Downs No. 19 Panthers

INDIANAPOLIS - Unbeaten No. 7 Indianapolis scored the first nine points of the second half to pull out of a tie and went on to claim a 74-57 victory over No. 19 Drury in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup of league powers Friday night at Nicoson Hall.

Indianapolis moved to 10-0 overall and 2-0 in the GLVC, while Drury fell to 7-3 and 1-1.

Coach Steve Hesser's Panthers hung tough with the tall and athletic Greyhounds for the first 20 minutes, settling for a 32-all tie at the halftime break. But UIndy, with three starters battling foul difficulties in the opening half, came out the aggressor to start the second half, opening with a 9-0 lead to snag some breathing room.

From there, the Greyhounds pushed the lead into double-digits in ending a two-game losing streak to the Panthers.

Kameron Bundy had 18 points and Mike Nwelue added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Panthers, who were outrebounded 31-19 by the Greyhounds.

"That's been a glaring weakness for this team ... we've been working on that, because that's been an Achille's heel," Drury coach Steve Hesser said. "And 20 turnovers ... in this game, you can't make mistakes in the game that have nothing to do with talent. And right now, this basketball team is making mistakes that have nothing to do with talent, and we've got to get that corrected.

"Indy's a good team. The Massey rankings - in my opinion, probably the most accurate - has Indy as the No. 1 team in the country. We competed in the first half, but unfortunately games are longer than 20 minutes. You've got to come out and play the full 40. And I was disappointed with the way we came out in the second half, but you've got to give Indy credit for that."

Joe Lawson had 23 points - 18 in the first half - while Lucas Barker and Salim Gloyd had 13 points each for the Greyhounds, who shot 52 percent from the field (23 of 44) while limiting the Panthers to 44 percent (19 of 43), including just 8-for-24 shooting in the second half.

Drury played without Lucciano Gamiz (foot) and Deon Pettigrew (illness), and saw senior standout Cameron Adams play just 15 minutes after tweaking an ankle early in the second half.

The Panthers will conclude the two-game road swing at Saint Joseph's for a 3:15 p.m. tipoff Sunday afternoon in Rensselaer, Ind. Drury returns home next week to host East powers Southern Indiana (8 p.m. Thursday) and Bellarmine (3:15 p.m. Saturday) at the O'Reilly Family Event Center. For tickets, call (417) 873-6389 or visit www.drurytickets.com.
