Drury dominated the women's match 169-72 and Missouri State used a big diving advantage to claim a 126-108 victory on the men's side as the crosstown rivals split their "Duel In The Pool" matchup Thursday night at the Breech Pool on Senior Night for the Panthers.
It was the same final result as in their meeting at MSU's Hammons Center Pool in mid-October, except what was a one-point win for the DU women turned into a blowout, and the Panthers' men crept closer to the NCAA Division I Bears despite winding up with a 29-0 deficit in diving, as Drury had no competitors to enter.
The victory by the Bears evens the all-time men's series now at 15-apiece, while Drury stretched its lead in the all-time women's series to 14-4.
Drury won all 11 races in the women's competition, and took care of business early by placing 1-2 in the 1000 Free with
Allie Reynolds and
Megan Ouhl and 1-2-3 with
Wai Ting Yu,
Sarah Pullen and
Leah Reed in the 200 Free, followed soon after by taking the top three spots in the 200 IM with
Gretchen Stein,
Sylwia Ciesielska and Zuzann Chwadeczko, the latter two newcomers to the squad at the semester break.
Drury also got a sweep from
Rebekah Laupp in the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions, and victories from
Ariel Xu in the 50 and 100 Free,
Wai Ting Yu in the 100 Fly,
Yekaterina Rudenko in the 100 Back,
Sarah Pullen in the 500 Free and
Lucie Jolly in the 100 Breast, in addition to taking the 200 Medley and 200 Free relays, the latter setting a pool record.
On the men's side, Sam Olson was a double-winner for the Panthers with his triumphs in the 50 and 100 Free (the latter in a pool-record 44.67, breaking a record - 44.84 - that had stood since 2001),
Daniel Rzadkowski took the 200 Free,
Sean Feher knocked off MSU star Paul Le in the 100 Back (with a pool-record 48.09, old mark of 48.67 set by Le last year) and
Kacper Pelczynski claimed the 100 Breast (in a pool-record 54.52) before DU finished the night with a victory in the 200 Free Relay, also setting a pool record.
Drury, the 10-time defending national men's champion and winner of five of the past six NCAA-II titles on the women's side, took time during the diving warmups to recognize 11 senior members this season - Feher, Olson, Pelczynski,
Stanislav Kuzmin,
Jordi Montseny,
Matthew Nichols and
Nathan Weiss for the men and
Allie Reynolds, Reed, Yu and
Chelsea Staab for the women.
The Panthers, ranked No. 1 nationally in D-II in both the men's and women's polls again this season, are back in action on Friday at Missouri, taking on the Tigers in a dual at 3 p.m. in Columbia.
Replays of the "Duel In The Pool" will be aired on Mediacom Connections 22 at 7 p.m. Friday and at noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
