ST. LOUIS -
Annie Armstrong scored a career-high 30 points, including 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, as No. 21 Drury rallied to down Maryville 77-70 for a Great Lakes Valley Conference victory Thursday night.
Armstrong made all five of her 3-point attempts in the second half as the Lady Panthers improved to 13-3 overall and maintained their GLVC West lead at 7-1.
Maryville fell to 10-7 and 4-4.
Drury trailed 33-28 at the half after hitting just 11 of 33 shots, and was down 41-29 with 16:53 to go before beginning its rally, started by an Armstrong 3-pointer. But it was a slow climb ... Armstrong's trey at 9:39 made it a 54-49 deficit, and another on the next trip cut it to 54-52.
The Lady Panthers finally surpassed the Saints for the first time at 58-57 on
Shelby White's 3-pointer with 6:18 to go. After Maryville grabbed the lead on the next trip, Drury secured it for good finally at 65-63 after Armstrong's fifth and final 3-pointer of the half.
The nation's best free-throw shooting team went 12-for-12 at the line from there to seal the victory.
"It was a gutsy performance by Annie," Drury coach Molly Miller said. "They were going under her on screens, so I told her every screen she uses, she was stepping back and hitting the three. And she did."You see in the box score that 30-point game, but
Paige Wilson shut down Shelby Miller. She had 14 points in the first half, and she finished with 14. On the defensive end, Paige was huge for us."
Drury also got 14 rebounds each from
Sanayika Shields and
Shelby White as the Lady Panthers dominated the boards 49-35 against the taller Saints.
Miller led five Saints in double-figures with 14 points, all in the first half.
White finished with 12 points and
Alice Heinzler had 10 for the Lady Panthers.
The Lady Panthers conclude their four-game GLVC road swing at Missouri-St. Louis in a 1 p.m. tipoff on Saturday.
