21st-Ranked Lady Panthers Visit UMSL Saturday In GLVC Play

The nationally 21st-ranked Drury Lady Panthers will try to complete a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference road swing the right way before returning home for seven of their final nine games when they visit Missouri-St. Louis for a 1 p.m. tipoff on Saturday.

Coach Molly Miller's Lady Panthers are 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the GLVC after rallying to beat Maryville 77-70 on Thursday behind a career-high 30 points from junior guard Annie Armstrong, including a 5-for-5 showing from 3-point range by the former Kickapoo High School standout in the second half to bring DU back from a 12-point deficit.

The Lady Panthers will take on an UMSL squad that's 8-8 overall and 4-4 in the GLVC, but also is 7-0 at the Mark Twain Building, including a 74-49 win over Missouri S&T on Thursday.

Alexis Lawrence, a 5-5 senior, averages 13.9 points to lead three Tritons scoring in double-figures for Coach Katie Vaughn's squad. Kelly Kunkel, a 6-0 junior, adds 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds and Tierra Snow, a 5-11 senior, adds 10.2 points and 6.0 boards. Kelly McGovern, a 5-7 senior and D-I Fordham transfer, leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per game and is one of four UMSL players averaging six or more boards on a squad that is outrebounding its opponents by an average of 39 to 30.

Kunkel had 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals in leading the Tritons to their win over S&T Thursday, in which they built a 40-17 lead by halftime after making 15 of 22 shots (68 percent) in the first 20 minutes. They "cooled" to 64 percent (11 of 17) in the second half and finished at 67 percent (26 of 39) for the game, while also outrebounding the Lady Miners 32-16.

Drury, which is 8-2 on the road this season, will look to shoot the ball better out of the gates against the Tritons, after struggling in the first half once again (11 of 33) at Maryville. The Lady Panthers made only 13 of 29 shots after halftime, but went 7 for 11 from 3-point range - with most of the damage done by Armstrong, who was 6-for-9 overall on treys for the game - to charge back in the closing minutes to grab their first lead. Drury, the nation's top free-throw shooting team, made 12 of 12 tries at the stripe down the stretch to seal the win.

Sanayika Shields and Shelby White grabbed 14 rebounds each to lead the Lady Panthers on the boards, with White matching her career high set earlier this season at Washburn.

Drury leads the all-time series with UMSL 19-1, including a 74-71 win in Springfield last season. The Lady Panthers' only loss in the series came in their last visit to UMSL, when they fell 58-56 on January 26, 2013.

Saturday's game can be heard on JOCK 98.7 FM (streamed live at www.jock987.com). It can also be viewed in a live webcast at www.umsltritons.com/watch for a $7 fee.

The Lady Panthers will return home next Thursday and Saturday to kick off their big stretch run at The O'. Thursday's 5:45 p.m. tipoff vs. Truman State is part of the American Cancer Society's "Black Out Cancer Night" initiative, with all fans encouraged to wear black to the game. Saturday will be the annual "Great Southern Bank Throwback Day" games versus Quincy, with the Lady Panthers to tip off at approximately 1 p.m. following a prep game at The O' beginning at 11 a.m.
