BOLIVAR -
Tevin Foster scored 25 points and a foul-plagued
Kameron Bundy came up with a game-saving defensive play just before the final horn as No. 16 Drury held off Southwest Baptist 82-79 for a fourth straight victory in the Bank of Bolivar "Highway 13 Cat Fight" at the Meyer Center Tuesday night.
Nadir Alston hit two free throws with six seconds left to put the Panthers up three, and Bundy blocked a potential game-tying 3-point attempt by SBU's Nate Nahirny as the final seconds ticked away to push Drury to 2-0 on the season.
SBU fell to 2-1.
Bundy, a consensus preseason All-America pick, played just 25 minutes while spending long stretches being preserved in foul trouble on the bench. But he made 9 of 12 free throws, many of those late, in finishing with 14 points to go with four assists.
Foster took up much of the slack offensively, hitting 8 of 14 shots and 7 of 10 at the stripe for his 25-point effort, adding three steals in 39 minutes.
Alston went 4-for-4 from the field and 3 of 4 at the line to finish with 11 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots in just 19 minutes off the bench.
"I'm really proud of Nadir," Drury coach
Steve Hesser said. "He hadn't played much, but his attitude has dramatically improved, and with that, his understanding of how we play has improved. You can't teach 6-8 and long.
"I thought every single person who played did some good things. What we need to do is go back to the film room, show them some things we did good and continue to repeat them, and show them some things we need to get better at. I thought we got tired late, but you've got to fight through that stuff.
"Bundy came up with a block and a nice play at the end, and we were able to get out of here with a victory."
Drury led 40-32 at the half, thanks to a 9-0 run to close out the half sparked by a big 3-pointer from
Lucciano Gamiz in the closing seconds. Gamiz finished with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists while playing 37 minutes.
SBU outrebounded the Panthers 39-29, with Logan Hovey pacing the Bearcats with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Cartier Dean had 13 points, Brian Patterson added 12 points and Kai Woodfall added 10 for the Bearcats.
Drury committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 15 by SBU.
