Panthers Look To Rebound Vs Rockhurst In Front Of Homecoming/Overflow Crowd

Drury's basketball Panthers will look to bounce back in front of a large crowd on Saturday when they play host to Rockhurst in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup on a day when they will retire the jerseys of two former DU greats at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.

Tipoff is set for 3:15 p.m.for the matchup with the Hawks on Homecoming and the fourth annual "Overflow The O'" game, with all tickets just $5 for the women's/men's doubleheader. Between games, at approximately 2:45 to 3 p.m., Drury will retire the Nos. 33 and 21 jerseys of former Panther stars Alex Hall and Brandon Lockhart, the duo of four-year players who led DU to its lone NCAA-II basketball national championship in 2012-13.

With the triple-header of events for Saturday's games, fans are encouraged to purchase their seats in advance by calling (417) 873-6389 or visiting the O'Reilly Center lower-level box office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Coach Steve Hesser's Panthers will seek to rebound from a 73-59 loss at home Thursday night against William Jewell. Drury played without senior forward Cameron Adams (back injury), clearly missing his 16.9 points and team-leading 5.8 rebounds per game on a night when they came up short in both categories to the Cardinals, whom they had defeated - behind a season-high 31 points from Adams - 74-57 in Liberty on January 17. Adams' status for Saturday's game remains up in the air.

The Panthers are now 16-8 overall and have slipped into a tie for the GLVC West lead at 10-6 with Truman State, which holds the tie-breaker over DU by virtue of its 85-81 win at The O' in their only meeting of the season on January 29. The West winner will get the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the GLVC Championship post-season tournament, while the second-place finisher between the two will be forced to play the opening round (at home) on Sunday, March 1.

While Drury finishes up against Rockhurst (7-17, 3-13 in the GLVC) and Missouri S&T (9-15, 2-14) next Thursday, both at The O', Truman will play at home Saturday against UMSL (17-9, 9-7) and then at Quincy (12-14, 6-10) on Feb. 26.

The Panthers will be looking to snap a rare three-game losing streak when they take on the Hawks on Saturday, and attempting to figure out their shooting woes of late in order to do so. Drury shot just .408 from the field in Thursday's loss to the Cardinals, on the heels of shooting .316 and .396 percent last weekend in road losses at Lewis and No. 12 Wisconsin-Parkside.

Kameron Bundy, who had gone 3-for-20 from the field in those two road setbacks last weekend, righted the ship a bit with a 7-for-14 effort, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range, in leading the Panthers with 19 points against Jewell, but the remainder of Thursday' starting five combined to go 6-for-18 (33 percent). Drury did receive a career-high 11 points from Deon Pettigrew (on 4-of-6 shooting), as the sophomore also had a team-high four rebounds as the Panthers were beaten 37-22 on the boards by the Cardinals.

Rockhurst snapped a four-game losing streak with an 87-81 win at Missouri S&T on Thursday behind 28 points and 12 rebounds from Dominique Washington. Adam Fatkin added 20 points and seven boards and Russell Burns had 14 points for the Hawks, who rallied from a 35-26 halftime deficit by scoring 61 second-half points. The same Hawks team that made just 4 of 23 shots (17 percent) in the opening half canned 23 of 35 attempts (66 percent) after halftime to charge back and beat the Miners.

Washington, a 6-6, 270-pound junior, averages 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds and Burns, a 6-5 graduate student, adds 10.9 points and 5.8 rebounds to lead the Hawks of coach Bill O'Connor, who will be making his final trip to Springfield as head coach of Rockhurst after announcing earlier this week his intentions to retire after 21 seasons with the Hawks after this campaign is over.

Bundy averages 17.1 points to pace the Panthers, who won 74-50 in Kansas City on January 15 behind 17 points each from Adams and Drake Patterson and 12 points each from Bundy and DaShaun Stark.

The Panthers led 33-21 at the half in the first meeting - when they held Rockhurst to 6-for-22 shooting over the first 20 minutes - and then made 16 of 23 attempts themselves (70 percent) in the second half to break it wide open. Burns had 12 points as the only Hawks player to reach double-figures.

Drury leads the all-time series with Rockhurst, its oldest rival, 65-44, with eight consecutive Panther victories since an 83-80 loss in Kansas City on January 2, 2011.

Saturday's game can be heard on JOCK 98.7 FM (streamed live at www.jock987.com) and will be televised live on Mediacom Connections 22. It can also be viewed in a free, live webcast at www.drurypanthers.com/watch.
