Panthers Thump McKendree 79-45 To Expand GLVC West Lead

Drury's "C/Kams" were in full force on Saturday, as Cameron Adams scored 26 points and Kameron Bundy added 20 as the Panthers rolled to a 79-45 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over McKendree on "The Courts/The Fieldhouse Youth Sports Day" at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.

The dynamic duo combined to make 18 of 23 shots, with Adams making 10 of his 11 attempts from the field to go with a game-high 10 rebounds as the Panthers improved to 16-5 overall and 10-3 in the GLVC. Drury now leads the GLVC West by two games over Truman State and Missouri-St. Louis (both 8-5) after Saturday's action.

Coach Steve Hesser's Panthers led McKendree just 22-19 with 7:55 left in the opening half before finishing the half on a 17-6 run to lead 39-25 at the break, largely behind 18 first-half points from Adams, who was 6 of 6 from the field and 6 of 7 at the line over the game's first 20 minutes.

"Cameron Adams started the game off with energy today, and that's something he's been lacking the last couple of games," Hesser said. "Our motto is February is our growth month, and we've just got to keep growing."

Hesser was able to turn to his bench greatly as the Panthers pushed the lead into the 30s, with no starter playing more than Adams' 27 minutes.

Hesser had a lot of praise for redshirt freshman Jerrod Harman, who grabbed three rebounds and added an assist in his five minutes of play, but drew a standing ovation from the crowd with his non-stop hustle.

"Obviously we started out better and shot it 60 percent in the first half, did a nice job of moving the basketball," Hesser said. "Overall, I'm pleased with our guys. They kept playing ... and what about Jerrod Harmon? I told my guys in the locker room if everyone played with the passion he does, we'd be a lot better in a hurry. My hat's off to that outstanding young man.

"He's been out of basketball a few years as he played baseball here ... if he stays with it, he'll play before he gets out of here. And you can hold me to that. It's important to him. If we could get everybody on that page to where each time I'm out there, it's 100 percent important to me ...' I just can't say enough about him."

Matt Holmes and Michael Jackson had 10 points each to lead McKendree (9-12, 2-11).

Drury made 15 of 25 shots in the opening half (60 percent) and finished at 54 percent (30 of 56) for the game, while holding the Bearcats to 38 percent (16 of 42). The Panthers turned it over just nine times by forcing 18 miscues by McKendree.

The Panthers will embark on a key GLVC East road swing next week, visiting Lewis (16-6, 8-5) on Thursday and Wisconsin-Parkside (20-2, 12-1) on Saturday.

NOTES

*Adams' 26-point day gives him 1,432 points for his four-year DU career, placing him 18th on the all-time school scoring list. He needs 17 points to move past former DU star Marc Ridlen (1,448 from 1980-84) for 17th on the charts.

*Adams' 26-10 double-double was his third on the season and second in the last three games.

*Bundy's 20-point effort gives him 1,070 points, moving him past current DU assistant coach Brandon Kimbrough (1,052) for 37th on the scoring list. Since scoring a season-low seven points at William Jewell on January 17, Bundy is averaging 22.3 points over his last six games.

*Drury's two road opponents next week, Lewis (10-3) and Parkside (10-1), are a combined 20-4 at home. Nationally top-ranked and unbeaten (at the time) Indianapolis fell 72-68 (at UWP) and 70-61 (at Lewis) on that road swing last weekend. Lewis (16-6 overall) has won four straight since suffering a three-game losing streak.

*Thursday's game will be only Drury's third visit to Lewis (Romeoville, Ill.) in nine regular season meetings between the Panthers and Flyers since Drury joined the GLVC in 2005-06, the others coming in 2010-11 (a 62-59 Drury win) and 2006-07 (an 83-80 OT loss). All told, 8 of their 11 meetings, regular or post-season, have been played in the Panthers' home gym, with Drury holding a 10-1 advantage in the all-time series.
