Panthers Outslug Maryville 13-8 To Take GLVC Series Opener Friday At Meador

Homes from Spencer Wilmes and Dallas Williams helped spark Drury to a 13-8 victory over Maryville in their Great Lakes Valley Conference series opener Friday evening at Meador Park.

The Panthers moved to 9-8-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the league with the victory, while the Saints fell to 9-13 and 2-7 as they are scheduled to play three more games this weekend. In a schedule switch, DU and Maryville will now play a single nine-inning game Saturday at 1 p.m. and a 7/9 inning doubleheader starting at 11 a.m., all at Meador.

Drury jumped out to a 4-0 lead, including a three-run homer from Wilmes, in the bottom of the first. The Saints countered with a single run in the second off DU starter Austin Faulconer (3-2), but the Panthers added a run in the fourth when Wilmes doubled and later scored on a Ryan Colombo sacrifice fly.

After Maryville closed to within 5-4 with two runs in the fifth, the Panthers snagged some breathing room with four in the sixth, highlighted by Williams' two-run blast to left, for a 9-4 cushion.

Drury would put it away with four more runs in the eighth, including a two-run single from Conner Wilson and RBI singles from Tyler Arthur and Wilmes, who went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four driven in on the day.

Bobby Lang had three hits and Williams, Arthur and Wilson finished with two each as part of Drury's 14-hit day.

Maryville managed 17 hits, including a 5-for-6 effort from leadoff man Sean Murphy and a 4-for-4 game from cleanup hitter Yoonjae Nam.

Faulconer went seven innings for the victory, allowing 14 hits and five runs (three earned), while striking out three and walking two.
