Lady Panthers Begin GLVC Title Quest Friday Against UIndy In St. Charles

With all the tradition of the program and the hot streaks that have followed the nationally eighth-ranked Lady Panthers this season, Drury will be trying to rid itself of one bad string this weekend in St. Charles, Mo. - a Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship bug.

The Lady Panthers, who've now won back-to-back GLVC West titles and have won or shared the West in eight of their 10 seasons as a league member, have had an alarming string of short stays at the GLVC meet of late, riding a string of four consecutive losses in the league's post-season tournament into the 2015 version, which they are intent to change starting with Friday's 2:30 p.m. matchup against eighth-seed Indianapolis.

Drury was the No. 1 seed last year as well, and was bounced from the GLVC meet in Evansville, Ind., in the opening round by eight-seed Maryville. Of course, those Lady Panthers bounced back nicely, winning the NCAA-II Midwest Regional and advancing to the Elite Eight in Erie, Pa.

First-year coach Molly Miller is expecting a more lengthy stay a Family Arena in St. Charles this weekend for her 23-3 Lady Panthers, who have won 11 consecutive games and 20 of their last 21 on the season.

The Drury-UIndy matchup is one of four quarterfinal contests on tap for Friday at Family Arena, a first-time venue for the league. In other games, No. fourth-seed UW-Parkside will play No. 5 seed Quincy at noon, No. 2 seed Lewis (the nation's second-ranked team and GLVC East champion) will face No. 7 seed Maryville at 6 p.m. and No. 3 seed Southern Indiana will take on 6-seed Missouri-St. Louis at 8:30.

Semifinals will be played at 6 and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, with Sunday's championship game slated for a 3:30 p.m. tipoff.

Drury and UIndy met once during the regular season, with the Lady Panthers posting a 78-56 victory after leading the Greyhounds by one at halftime, using an early second-half spurt to key a 49-28 domination of UIndy after halftime.

The Greyhounds, who lost seven of their last nine games to finish the regular season, caught fire at the right time last week, defeating Saint Joseph's 82-81 in triple overtime last Thursday in the regular season finale before smashing fifth-seed Truman State 72-51 in Kirksville on Sunday.

Princess German, a 5-6 junior, averages 18.2 points (second in the GLVC) to lead coach Constantin Popa's Greyhounds, who receive 15.8 points per game from 5-11 senior Kelly Walter. That duo combined for 42 of UIndy's 56 points in the regular season loss to the Lady Panthers.

Annie Armstrong averages 13.8 points and Sanayika Shields adds 12.6 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers. Both were named to the All-GLVC First Team on Wednesday.

Drury leads the all-time series with Uindy by a 6-5 count. They last met in the GLVC postseason in 2012, when the Greyhounds knocked DU out of the tournament with a 60-54 loss in Springfield, Ill.

Friday's game can be heard on KWTO 560 AM (streamed live at www.radiospringfield.com). All games of the GLVC Championship tourney can be seen in a free, live webcast at www.glvcsports.com/watch.
