Drury Softball Panthers Fall Twice in Extra Innings In GLVC Road Pair at Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.  – The Drury Panther softball team finished the season by winning eleven of their last fourteen games but fell twice at Lewis both games going to extra innings 3-2 in the opener and 7-5 in the nightcap on Monday. 

Drury ends the season with a 25-27 overall record and a 12-18 record in the GLVC with Lewis going to 25-20 overall and 15-13 in the GLVC.

Kari Hillenburg hit her sixth homer of the season in the first inning and Rachael Michaelis hit her first career homer as a Panther in the top of the sixth for Panther runs in the opener.

Lewis pulled to within a run when they scored on an RBI single in the seventh by Carolyn Nojiri and then tied it in the seventh on a RBI single by Carly Jaworski to force extra innings.  An RBI single by Nojiri in the bottom of the ninth game Lewis a 3-2 extra innings victory.

Hillenburg led the Panthers with three hits, a run and an RBI and Carson Forge had a pair of doubles.  The Flyers were led by Nojiri who had three hits and a pair of RBIs.

Kelly Bowler (15-12) earned the victory for the Flyers and struckout ten with Jessica Kjeldgaard (15-13) receiving the loss with five strikeouts.  Lewis outhit the Panthers twelve to eight in the contest and each team committed one error.

Michaelis singled to score Shelby Weissenbach in the second inning of the nightcap to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.  The Flyers tied it up on a solo homer by Sarah DeMasi in the bottom of the second. 

Marissa Ross hit the Panthers third homer on the day in the Panther third putting DU on top again 2-1. Forge singled to bring Ross home in the Drury fifth to push the DU lead to 3-1.

The Flyers rallied in the sixth to a take 4-3 lead on a three run RBI triple by Brittany Russell in the bottom of the sixth.  With the game on the line for the Panthers in the seventh Hillenburg had an RBI single and  Ross delivered with an RBI double to score Hillenburg to put Drury back on top 5-4.  The Flyers forced extra innings when Kelsey Ullrich homered in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up 5-5.

Jaworski who tied the first game to force extra innings would win the game for the Flyers in the nightcap with a two run homer in the bottom of the 11th for a 7-5 Lewis victory.

Lewis finished with 12 hits and Drury had eight led by Ross who had three hits, two RBIs and two runs. 

Lainie Schweickert (10-8) earned the win for the Flyers and posted nine strikeouts with Weissenbach (10-11) receiving the loss for the Panthers.
