Rockhurst ends Drury's NCAA-II tournament run in penalty kick shootout

HAYS, Kan. – The Panthers were inches away from having their Cinderella run continue to the NCAA-II national tournament quarterfinals, but after a two overtimes and a 1-1 tie, Rockhurst ended Drury's season by winning a penalty kick shootout 5-4 in Hays, Kansas on Friday.

Drury ends the season with a 13-4-4 record while Rockhurst moves on with a 17-2-3 mark.

The Panthers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on Joe Fehr header. It was Fehr's second goal of the season and came on an assist from Dean McConnell.

Drury held onto the lead for more than 50 minutes but the Hawks, ranked fifth nationally in NCAA-II and the region's top seed, tied the game with six minutes left in regulation. Mitch Moncada rushed in from the right side of the net and scored his sixth goal of the season on a header that tied the game at 1-1.

The two overtime periods went scoreless with Drury getting off one shot to Rockhurst's three.

The penalty kick shootout to break the tie went seven rounds deep before the Hawks ended the game when Michael Panarisi converted his try giving Rockhurst a 5-4 win.

Drury was the sixth seed in the Midwest Region earning the region's final bid to the bracket. The Panthers won at third seeded Saginaw Valley State 2-1 last week, then advanced to the third round beating second seeded Tiffin 2-1. Drury was making their fourth national tournament appearance in program history.
