Drury Softball Earns Split vs. Lewis in Regular Season Finale

Kaelie Smith had five hits, four RBIs and scored a three runs to help the Drury softball Panthers earn a GLVC split vs. Lewis winning the opener 3-0 before falling 7-5 in the nightcap in their regular season finale Sunday at Thompson Field.

Drury finishes the year with an18-32 overall record and went 11-19 in the GLVC and Lewis falls to 20-30 overall and 8-22 in GLVC play.

In the opener the Panthers wasted no time scoring with a first inning RBI single by Smith to score Kari Hillenburg and an RBI double by Shelby Weissenbach to plate Smith in the opening inning. 

Weissenbach extended the Panther lead to 3-0 in the fifth when she singled to score Rachael Michaelis.

Smith had three hits for Drury and Weissenbach added a pair of RBI doubles to help Drury to an eight hit effort with the Flyers getting just two hits.
 
Weissenbach (11-15) earned the win for Drury and Dara Sanders (5-4) got the loss for Lewis.

In the nightcap the Flyers jumped on the Panthers early with five runs on three hits and two errors in the opening inning.  Smith doubled to right center to bring home Hillenburg in the third to cut the lead to 5-1. 

The Flyers added a run in the fourth on an RBI single for a 6-1 advantage.  Smith capped off her outstanding day with a two run homer in the fifth inning to cut the Flyers lead to 6-3.  Lewis tacked on their final run on an RBI single in the seventh for a 7-3 score. 

An RBI hit by pitch by Abbey LeJong and an RBI single by Kendyl Frerking to score Weissenbach cut the lead to 7-5 in the seventh but Lewis was able to hang on for the win. 

Jaworski led Lewis with two hits with the Flyers racking up 11 hits and Drury having nine hits with Grace Hargadon and Smith having two hits.

Jessica Kjeldgaard (5-17) got the loss for Drury with Paige Fossey (4-9) earning the win for Lewis with Ali Brems getting her first save.
