SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Kayla Day's goal inside the game's final four minutes lifted Drury past Southwest Baptist in a 2-1 win Tuesday night at Harrison Stadium.
The win boosted Drury's record to 2-0 while the Bearcats dropped to 0-3.
Day, a freshman, broke the 1-1 tie and scored her first collegiate goal after being set up in front the goal by Kerri Morris. Morris, a junior from O'Fallon, Missouri, burst past a defender left of the net and found Day in front. Both Morris and Day are Fort Zumwalt West High School products.
Drury had a 1-0 lead early when Gabby Menendez scored in the game's fifth minute. Southwest Baptist tied the game late in the first half on Kennedy Strain's goal setting up a 1-1 deadlock at halftime.
The Panthers had an advantage in shots 15-13 and put six on goal against SBU's three shots on goal.
Tuesday's game was the first meeting between the two teams since 2006. Drury remained perfect the all-time series going to 7-0 against Southwest Baptist.
The Panthers open play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference on Friday at the Lake Country Soccer Complex against Indianapolis. Game time is 5 p.m.
