Panther Softball Earns Split Sunday at NTC Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla.  –The Drury softball team earned a split, falling in the opener 6-5 in extra innings to Kutztown, before dominating Saint Michael's 7-0 in the nightcap at the NTC Spring Games.

Drury is now 10-10 on the season.  Kutztown moves to 8-4, and Saint Michael's (0-1) played its season opener.

In the opener, the Panthers effort to come back from down four runs in the third inning came up just short.  The Panthers scored five runs in the comeback on singles by Kaelie Smith and Taylor Ellestad in the fourth, a double by Hannah Hearst in the fourth, and a groundout in the eighth.

Drury kept tying the game up, but could never get over the hump.  Kutztown University eventually took the lead for good thanks to a double in the ninth inning.

Kutztown captured the lead in the first inning on a Cheyenne Jones single.  The Panthers knotted the game up at five in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Savannah Nierintz (6-1) earned the win for Kutztown.  She threw nine innings, giving up four runs, six hits, striking out nine, and walking zero.  Jessica Kjeldgaard (5-6) took the loss for the Panthers.  She went nine innings, allowing five runs, eight hits, striking out one, and walking one.

Smith went 2 for 4 at the plate to lead the Panthers in hits.  The Panthers didn't commit a single error in the field.  Kutztown collected eight hits.  Jones and Sara Keeny each collected multiple hits for Kutztown.

In the nightcap, Destiny Bolen (5-4) went seven innings, surrendering zero runs, two hits, and striking out six.  Danielle Brown took the loss for Saint Michael's College.  She threw six innings, surrendering seven runs, 12 hits, and striking out ten.

The Panthers grabbed an early lead.  Drury scored on a triple by Ellestad in the first inning, a single by Kari Hillenburg in the second inning, and an error in the second inning.

RBI singles by Miki Andrus and Emily Stringer in the third extended the Panther lead to 6-0.  Smith singled home Hillenburg in the sixth for run number seven.

The Panthers had 14 hits in the game.  Ellestad went 3 for 3, and had an RBI and a run.  Samantha Dockweiler was 3 for 4, with a run.  Hillenburg went 3 for 5, with three runs and an RBI.

Tomorrow at the NTC Spring Games, Drury will face Wayne State University at 2:30 p.m. and Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 7:30 p.m.
