INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. –The Drury softball team dropped a pair at 20
th-ranked Indianapolis, 5-3 in extra innings in the opener, and 7-1 in the nightcap, in their GLVC opening series Saturday at Baumgartner Field.
Drury is now 10-13, 0-2 GLVC on the season, and Indianapolis improved to 19-5, 2-0 GLVC.
In the opener,
Dominique Salinas singled up the middle in the first to score two for the Panthers.
Kaelie Smith would give Drury a 3-0 lead on an RBI fielders choice that scored
Kari Hillenburg in the third.
The Panthers kept the Greyhounds off the board until the fifth, when Dani Turner hit a two run homer, her eighth of the year, to cut the DU lead to 3-2. UINDY tied it up in the sixth on a Taylor Podschweit homer.
Natalie Lalich, would hit the Greyhounds third homer of the day, a two-run walk-off shot in the 10
th for the 5-3 win.
Both teams recorded 10 hits with UNIDY committing two errors.
Taylor Ellestad, Hillenburg,
Rachael Michaelis, and Salinas each went 2 for 5. Lalich went 3 for 5 with two RBI's, and scored a run to lead Indianapolis.
Lauren Honkomp (13-1) earned the win for the Greyhounds, and
Jessica Kjeldgaard (5-8) received the loss, with three strikeouts in nine innings of action.
In the nightcap, UNIDY got on the board with an RBI single in the first inning. Salinas pulled the Panthers even in the third with her second home run of the year.
UINDY scored six runs on five hits in the fourth to seal a 7-1 win.
Cathy Skaggs went 2 for 3 to lead the Greyhounds, who finished with eight hits. Drury tallied five hits.
Crystal Sicard (6-3) threw 6.1 innings in a winning outing for Indianapolis.
Destiny Bolen (5-5), went four innings with three strikeouts in a losing effort.
On March 19
th, Drury will continue GLVC play at Saint Joseph's. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
