OZARK, Mo.- Drury started Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a sweep of a doubleheader against Missouri S&T winning game one 7-2 and game two 8-4 on Saturday at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark.
Â
Drury extended their winning streak to five games and raised their record to 14-6 with a 2-0 conference record. Missouri S&T dropped to 9-11 and 0-2 in the league.
Â
The teams continue their four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
Â
In game one,
Ryan Colombo (5-0) faced just three batters over the minimum in a complete game win, 7-2. The senior from Topeka, Kansas went 9 innings allowing four hits and two runs with two walks and eight strikeouts. He retired the last 11 batters he faced.
Â
"Ryan left some pitches up early in the game but really settled down after the fourth inning," said Drury head coach
Scott Nasby. "We nine hits from hitters two through five in our line-up. Those guys feed off each other."
Â
Drury scored three runs in the first inning and added a run in the third on a solo home run by
KK Daniel that put the Panthers in front 4-2.
Â
Daniel went 2 for 4, hit his second home run of the season and drove in two runs.
Nic Perkins went 3 for 4 with a run and 3 RBI's.
Â
The Panthers turned the second game of the doubleheader around with a seven-run sixth inning to win 8-4.
Â
Drury trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth and scored seven runs on five hits, one walk, and a Miners' error while six different Panthers had a RBI in the frame. Â
Â
"We stranded four in scoring position in the first three innings," said coach Nasby. "That helped us in the late innings because they had to pitch in stressful situations and we were able to get to their bullpen quicker. We also had guys that were more comfortable at the plate late in the game because they had been up in that situation before."
Â
Drury SS
Shane Benes went 2 for 4 with a RBI and a double while
Dylan Bradshaw went 2 for 3 with a run and a RBI.Â
Â
Alex Austin (2-1) got the win in relief for Drury.
