Panthers split doubleheader with Quincy

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- Drury got two strong pitching performances but split a doubleheader with Quincy winning game one 2-0 but falling in game two 2-1 at Thompson Field in Springfield on Sunday.
 
The Panthers ended the day 17-18 and 5-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Quincy went to 11-15 and 5-7 in the league.
 
Drury scored two runs in the first inning of game one and held that up for a 2-0 win. Panthers starting pitcher Jessica Kjeldgaard (9-10) got the win and her second shutout of the season as she went seven innings and allowed seven hits with two walks and one strikeout. The win was Kjeldgaard's 40th career victory and she became Drury's all-time leader in wins during the weekend surpassing Kelsey Garthoff (2009-12).
 
The Panthers got back-to-back doubles in the first inning from Kaelie Smith and Taylor Ellestad who picked up a RBI with her extra-base hit. Ellestad scored later in the inning on a ground ball by Rachael Michaelis.
 
Drury made a late threat in game two but fell short to the Hawks 2-1. Quincy scored a run in the second and it stayed 1-0 until the Hawks added a run in the top of the seventh. Drury mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh sparked by back-to-back walks to Hannah Hearst and Miki Andrus. Dominque Salinas got the Panthers within a run of the lead with a RBI single but Quincy starter Emily Griskill got a strikeout to end the game and left Drury runners stranded at second and third.
 
Griskell (8-6) got the win going seven innings and allowing five hits and one run with four walks and eight strikeouts. Destiny Bolen (8-8) took the loss for the Panthers as she allowed seven hits and two runs over seven innings with one walk and one strikeout.

Drury returns to action on Tuesday when they play at Missouri S&T in a conference doubleheader. Game one begins at 2 p.m. in Rolla.
