GLVC Leader Rockhurst Sweeps DU Softball Saturday

GLVC leader Rockhurst took a GLVC pair with wins of 3-0 and 6-1 over the Drury softball Panthers Saturday at Thompson Field.

Drury is now 17-20, 5-9 GLVC on the season, and Rockhurst improved to 22-16, 11-3 in the league.

In the opener, Designated Player Lauren Cairo broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth, with an RBI single to center for Rockhurst.  Drury had the bases loaded in the sixth with two outs, but couldn't capitalize.  The Hawks cushioned their lead by scoring seventh inning runs on a fielders choice and a sacrifice fly.

Shannon Greene (5-10) took the win with a complete game shutout.  Jessica Kjeldgaard (9-11) received the loss.  She went seven innings, gave up three runs, seven hits, and struck out four.

Kelley Conway went 2 for 3 for the Panthers, who finished with four hits.  Cairo went 2 for 3 for the Hawks, who turned in a seven hit outing.

In the nightcap, Rockhurst struck for a pair of runs in the third inning, coming on an RBI single, and a Panther error.  The Hawks made it a 3-0 lead with an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth.  Drury's lone tally in the contest came in the fourth on a Rockhurst error that allowed pinch runner Annah Baize to score.

Rockhurst capped off their scoring with three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth for a 6-1 final.

Drury recorded six hits off Bridgette Sappington (16-4), who was last week's national player of the week.  Taylor Ellestad led all Panthers at the plate, going 2 for 3.  Cairo went 3 for 4 to pace the Hawks, who finished with 13 hits.  Destiny Bolen (8-9) went 4.1 innings in a losing effort.

Drury will continue GLVC action tomorrow, when they travel to William Jewell for a noon start.
