OZARK, Mo.- Drury swept Maryville in a doubleheader on Sunday at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark to take all four games in their weekend series against the Saints. The Panthers shut out Maryville 4-0 in the first game and won game two 10-3.
Â
Drury raised their record to 30-15 and 16-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Maryville dropped to 22-24 and 9-15 in the GLVC.
Â
All four runs in the first game were scored in the opening frame.
Nic Perkins slammed a two-run home run to centerfield to get Drury on the board. Two batters later,
Dylan Bradshaw hit a two-run homer giving the Panthers a 4-0 lead.
Â
Austin Simms (5-4) went the distance for Drury firing a seven-inning, four-hit complete game shutout. Simms walked two and struck out four.
Â
Senior SS
Ryan Colombo and DH K.K. Daniel both went 2 for 3 at the plate in the game for the Panthers.
Â
In game two, Drury trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the seventh but tied the game scoring three runs in the inning capped by Daniel's game-tying RBI single. The Panthers got out of a bases-load jam in the top of the eighth, then blew the game open sending 12 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the inning as part of a 7-run frame that saw Drury collect four hits, three walks, a hit batsman and a Saints error.
Â
"From the third through the eighth, we were getting people to second base but couldn't come up with a big hit," said Drury head coach
Scott Nasby. "We kept pressuring them and then, finally, it broke in the eighth."
Â
Daniel finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBI's. Senior 3B
Devan O'Bryan went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.
Â
Following the game, coach Nasby added that he was pleased about the wins and the opportunity for all of his senior players to be on the field in their last regular season home game.
Â
"To be able to get
Matt Diekemper in there was great," he said. "He did a great job pitching the ninth inning and was able to get some quick outs. And to get
Weston Buchanan in the outfield for an appearance was great too. Those guys are more than deserving of that opportunity."
Â
The Panthers are in action again on Wednesday with a non-conference game at Missouri Western State. Game time is 5 p.m. in St. Joseph, Missouri.
