TOPEKA, Kan. – The Drury volleyball team opened the season with two wins in their first day of competition at the Washburn Invitational tournament in Topeka, Kansas on Friday. The Panthers won their first game 3-0 over Emporia State and swept Western State Colorado 3-0 to finish the day.
Drury started the tournament by winning all three sets against Emporia State, 25-20, 25-21, 25-15.
Paige Perry had 12 kills and 12 digs in her Drury debut. The Ozark native and transfer from Missouri State also had 1.5 blocks.
Kendra Sater added 36 assists and 14 digs.
The Panthers then swept past Western State Colorado 3-0. After winning the first set 25-20, Drury trailed 13-8 in the second set before reeling off nine straight points to take a 17-13 lead. The Panthers won the second set 25-19 and cruised to a 25-11 win in the third. Junior
Bentley Mara had a career high 18 kills to lead Drury while
Kendra Sater had 33 assists.
Drury ended the day 2-0 while Western State went to 0-2. Emporia State fell to 0-1 after their season opening loss to the Panthers.
Drury returns to action tomorrow on the second day of competition at the Washburn Invitational. The Panthers take on East Central at 1:30 p.m. and wrap up their play in the event against Arkansas Tech at 5:30 p.m.
