15th ranked Panthers host Hillsdale in NCAA-II regional quarterfinals
The Drury University volleyball team will make their first appearance in the NCAA-II tournament in program history on Thursday at 5 p.m. when they host Hillsdale at the O'Reilly Family Event Center. The Panthers are the number one seed in the Midwest Region and are the host team of the regional tournament.
Drury is 27-6, ranked 15th in the nation, and were the co-champions in the Great Lakes Valley Athletic Conference going 15-3 in the league's regular season. The Panthers advanced to the GLVC tournament championship where they lost 3-1 to Rockhurst on Saturday.
Hillsdale will be making their 11th NCAA-II tournament appearance and locked in an automatic berth winning the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament with a 3-0 win over Findlay at home on Saturday. The Chargers completed their league season undefeated going 19-0. They seeded eighth on the regional bracket.
Thursday's regional quarterfinal is a rematch from an Oct. 12 game that Drury won 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23) in the first game of the Mizuno Crossover Tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Bentley Mara had 18 kills in the match while
Kendra Sater had 48 assists and
Bree Schmidt contributed 31 digs. Paige VanderWall led Hillsdale with 20 kills and four blocks while Lindsey Mertz had 50 assists.
The winner of Thursday's quarterfinal match will advance to the semifinals and play the winner of the 7:30 p.m. game between fourth-seeded Lewis (25-7) and number five seed Michigan Tech (23-7).
The regional championship is set for Saturday at 6 p.m.
The winner of the Midwest Regional will advance to the NCAA-II championship site in Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
Each game of the tournament will be broadcast live on the internet through
www.glvcsn.com/drury.
Tickets for the regional tournament will go on sale Thursday at the O'Reilly Family Event Center box office and will be $5 for adults, $3 for students and $2 for children. All seating will be general admission.
