ROLLA, Mo. – The second meeting of the season between Drury and Missouri S&T didn't go anything like the first encounter, but the Panthers still found a way to pick up their second win of the year over the Miners as they earned a 90-85 win in Rolla on Saturday.
Drury improved to 16-4 and 9-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Missouri S&T remained winless in the league dropping to 0-13 in the conference and 2-19 overall.
Allen Billinger and
Isaac Johnson both had 16 points to lead the Panthers.
Drury blew out Missouri S&T 118-74 on Jan. 13 at the O'Reilly Family Event Center, but Saturday's game proved to be a very different contest.
Missouri S&T shot 54 percent from the floor going 30 for 56 and were 12 for 28 from three-point range. Drury, however, outrebounded the Miners 38-27 and had 20 offensive boards as they fought off the upset bid.
"For over 30 minutes of the game, I would say S&T deserved to win," said Drury head coach
Steve Hesser. "We made some plays down the stretch, got some rebounds, especially on some offensive boards, and that was the difference."
Chris Harris had a game-high 20 points for Missouri S&T.
The Panthers led 41-39 at halftime, and the two teams went back and forth in the second half as the lead changed 16 times. Drury was able to build their biggest lead of the game, an eight-point advantage at 84-76, with 2:58 remaining and held off Missouri S&T down the stretch.
Drury shot 45 percent from the field in the game going 29 for 64, and they were 11 for 33 from three-point range.
The win was the Panthers first victory at Missouri S&T in two years. Drury lost at the Bullman Multipurpose Building last year and in the 2015-16 season.
Saturday's game was the first of three straight road games for the Panthers. Drury travels to Rockhurst on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. game in Kansas City.
