Lady Panthers win sixth straight with 100-69 win at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The eighth-ranked Drury Lady Panthers won their sixth straight game with a 100-69 win over Rockhurst on Thursday night in Kansas City, Missouri.

Drury improved to 21-2 and 12-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while Rockhurst dropped to 9-12 and 5-8 in the league.

The Lady Panthers burst out of the gate to a 20-2 lead, but the Hawks battled back to pull within 10 in the second quarter. Drury pushed the lead to 14 at halftime, 48-34.

Lucia Fernandez and Alice Heinzler both had 20 points to lead Drury. Fernandez's total was a season-high as she went 7 for 12 from the field.

Hailey Diestelkamp had her seventh double-double of the year and came within a rebound of a Drury single-record. The sophomore from Owensville had 14 points and a career-high 21 boards. Her rebound total was one shy of Melanie Oliver's 22 boards that came against Indianapolis in 2010.

"I'm so proud of Hailey's effort," said Drury head coach Molly Miller. "She always tracks the ball, and she never takes a possession off when it comes to rebounding. That's rare, and that's a hustle stat shows the type of effort she gives."

Drury shot 48 percent from the field in the game going 31 for 64. The Lady Panthers shot a season-high 43 free throws and connected on 27 of them.

Rockhurst went 38 percent from the floor hitting 24 of their 64 attempts. The Hawks committed 27 turnovers.

"It's hard to say it when you win by 31, but we need to do a better job defensively," said Miller. "We've got to work on our half-court defense after our full-court pressure. We gave up some good shots, but there are some really good looking stat lines when you look at the box score, and I thought we gave a great effort."

The win marked the second straight game Drury reached 100 points and is the third time in four games they have hit the century mark.

Drury returns to action on Saturday as they take on Maryville for a 1 p.m. game in St. Louis.
