OZARK, Mo.- Drury bounced back from a 4-2 loss in game one to split their doubleheader with Maryville as they won game two 6-3 on Saturday at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark.
Â
The Panthers ended the day with a record of 25-19 and 16-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Saints moved to 23-21 and 15-7 in the league.
Â
Drury scored a run in the first two innings of game one, but Maryville scored a run in the fifth and three in the seventh to take the lead. The Saints crossed the plate on a wild pitch and had four consecutive singles during the frame to take control.
Â
Maryville held off the Panthers by turning three double plays and Drury stranded 13 runners in the game one loss.
Â
"We had 10 walks in the first game, and that was our plan, to get on base, but then we didn't make anything happen," said Drury head coach
Scott Nasby. "Whether it was a bunt, or whether it was a hit, we just didn't get it done."
Â
In game two, the Panthers again jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Maryville seized the advantage on the scoreboard with a three-run fourth inning.
Â
This time, Drury responded. K.K. Daniel and
Brandt Ollinger started the bottom of the fifth with singles, and
Ryan Kayhill's sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. An error at third base then allowed both runners to score giving the Panthers back the lead.
Â
Drury added two more runs in the sixth with an RBI-triple from
Clayton Engel and a run-scoring double by Ollinger.
Â
Engel went 3 for 4 in the game with a home run, his second of the year, a triple, a run scored and two RBI's.
Â
"(Engel) was great for us today offensively," said Nasby. "He got hits in big spots for us, and he gave us the opportunity to score on one swing on a day when that wasn't happening for the rest of our guys."
Â
The Panthers ended the day in a first place tie in the GLVC-West with Quincy. The Hawks swept William Jewell on Saturday to move even with Drury in the standings. Maryville goes into Sunday's doubleheader just one game behind both teams in the division race.
Â
Drury plays their final regular season home game on Sunday as they play the last two games of the series against Maryville. The Panthers will honor their senior players before game one of the doubleheader that starts at noon at U.S. Baseball Park.
