Panthers extend winning streak to seven games with sweep over Rockhurst

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- The Drury Panthers extended their winning streak to seven games as they swept Rockhurst in a doubleheader on Sunday at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark. Drury won the first game 4-3 and took game two 6-1 in the first two games of a four-game series against the Hawks.

Drury raised their record to 17-15 and 8-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and dropped Rockhurst to 7-19 and 2-8 in the league.

The Panthers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win game one. The Hawks took their first lead of the game in the top half of the seventh with two runs, but Drury responded. Freshman first baseman Bayler Hinz put the Panthers back in front with a two-RBI single that scored Ryan Kayhill and Brandt Ollinger. Hinz ended the game going 2 for 3 with a double.

"Bayler came up with a big knock in a big situation," said Drury head coach Scott Nasby. "We've had a lot of those situations recently, and we've had anyone from freshmen to seniors stepping up. It was big for Bayler to come through with that hit."

Ryan Wedemeyer (3-0) got the win in relief for the Panthers, and Nick Constantino struck out two batters in the ninth to earn his fifth save.

Drury took advantage of two Rockhurst errors in the second game and opened up a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Freshman Tom Tewes (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win as the Lincoln, Nebraska native went six innings allowing four hits, one run and four walks with seven strikeouts.

"(Tom) struggled against the lead-off guy for four of his six innings but that was his best outing," said Nasby. "He made big pitches in big spots. He walked a few, but he got the big outs when he needed them."

Brant Schaffitzel went 3 for 4 at the plate for the Panthers with a run scored and an RBI. Colin Garner went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI while Ryan Kayhill picked up hits in both halves of Sunday's doubleheader to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.

The two teams will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader on Monday. Game one starts at noon at U.S. Baseball Park.
