QUINCY, Ill.- The Drury Panthers split a doubleheader at Quincy on Friday and maintained their one-game lead in the West Division of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Panthers lost game one 6-2 but held on for a 3-2 win in the second game.
Drury ended the day 28-20 and 19-7 in the GLVC while Quincy went to 34-14 and 18-8 in the league.
J.C. DuMuri belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning that broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Hawks the lead for good in game one. Drury pulled within two when
Brandt Ollinger scored on a passed ball in the eighth, but Michael Nielson hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning for Quincy to put the game out of reach.
Hawks starter Riley Martin (4-2) went seven innings allowing four hits and one run with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Ollinger led Drury going 2 for 3 with a run, a double and a walk.
The Panthers had to hang on for a 3-2 win in the second game as Quincy, trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, loaded the bases with one out. The Hawks pulled within a run on a sacrifice fly but Drury closer
Nick Costantino recorded the final out on a pop up to second base to earn his ninth save.
With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth,
Brandt Ollinger drove in two runs with a double to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead. Ollinger went 1 for 2 and walked twice in the game while
Brant Schaffitzel scored two runs and was 1 for 3 at the plate.
Tom Tewes (3-2) got the win for Drury going 6.1 innings allowing four hits and two runs with four walks and a career-high nine strikeouts.
The Panthers need to win just one of the two games in Saturday's doubleheader at Quincy to clinch the West Division title for the second year in a row. Tomorrow's twin-bill, which ends the four-game series and the 2018 regular season, starts at noon at Quincy Stadium.
