SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- The Drury Panthers extended their winning streak to seven games and won for the tenth time in their last 11 contests with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) win over William Jewell at Weiser Gym on Thursday night in Springfield.
Â
Drury improved to 12-7 and kept their Great Lakes Valley Conference record perfect at 6-0. The Cardinals dropped to 6-12 and 2-4 in the league.
Â
The Panthers controlled the lead in the opening set winning 25-19 but needed to reel off eight straight points to come from behind to win the second set 25-19. With the score tied at 20-20 in the third, the Panthers took five of the next seven points to close out the match.
Â
"Our defense did a great job tonight giving us some extra opportunities through some long rallies," said Drury head coach
Jenifer Bahner. "Earlier in the season, when we were down, I think the feeling on the court was a little bit frantic at times. Tonight, I felt like we were composed even though we got behind by a few points. For us, that's a sign of maturity, growth, and development from where we were at the beginning of the season."
Â
Julia McCown led the Panthers with 12 kills while
Reba Thomsen had 28 assists, 13 digs, and two service aces.
Â
Maddie Wingert led the Cardinals with 12 kills.
Â
Drury returns to action on Saturday when they host 12th ranked Rockhurst at 3 pm at Weiser Gym.
