Panthers drop a pair in Crossover Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Drury fell twice on Saturday in the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament as they lost to Walsh 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 21-25, 25-17) and to Grand Valley State 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-22) at The Volleyball Academy in Indianapolis, Indiana.
 
The Panthers were edged in their first two sets against Walsh falling 25-22 and 26-24 but got back in the match with a 25-21 win in the third. Drury had an early 5-4 lead in the fourth set before the Cavaliers reeled off nine straight points and closed out the match with a 25-17 win.
 
Julia McCown led the Panthers with 14 kills but was the only Drury player in double-figures in that category. Makina Wratten had two solo blocks and five block assists while Gabby Birmingham had 23 assists and two service aces.
 
Drury lost their second match of the day in a 3-0 loss to Grand Valley State. The Panthers registered only four blocks as a team and had a .088 hitting percentage.
 
Makina Wratten had 10 kills and two blocks while Gabby Birmingham had 25 assists.
 
The Lakers had a .293 hitting percentage and were led by Jaeli Primus' 13 kills. Mattie McCabe had two solo blocks and seven block assists for Grand Valley State.
 
Drury ended the day with a 13-10 record while Walsh improved to 10-6, and Grand Valley State went to 8-12.
 
The Panthers continue their road stretch with a game at Arkansas Tech on Tuesday. Game time is 6 pm in Russellville, Arkansas.
